THE SOUTH SUBURBAN COUNCIL ON ALCOHOLISM AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE 50TH ANNIVERSARY

WHEREAS, the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse was found in October 1967 by a group seeking to help others that were struggling with alcoholism and addiction; and

WHEREAS, the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse established the first alcoholism treatment center for the area that it served; and

WHEREAS, the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse would bring a treatment alternative to a jail cell, state mental health facility, or formal detoxification center in Manteno; and

WHEREAS, the South Suburban Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse would expand throughout the years through donations and grants to provide residential fordable and effective chemical dependency treatment and rehabilitation to residents of the greater Chicago Southland community; and

HONORING HOMER GARY

WHEREAS, Homer Gary is a native of Phoenix City, Alabama, where he graduated from high school; and

WHEREAS, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Alabama State University before joining the Army, and returned to receive a Master of Science in Management of Public Services from DePaul; and  

WHEREAS, Homer Gary spent almost four years stationed in Germany, where he was a Medical Corpsman, assisting doctors in various emergency operations; and

WHEREAS, he moved to Chicago in August 1964 and his first job was a Social Studies and Music teacher; and 

WHEREAS, among his students during his stint as a teacher were the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) Ronald Brown and George Anderson, who was in eighth grade at the time and remembers Homer as a nice and cool fella; and 

WHEREAS, after that Homer went to work for the Chicago Transit Authority.  That’s when a friend who worked at the Chicago Housing Authority encouraged him to apply for the position of Community and Internal Relations Aide in the Tenant Relations Department.

MATTIE RUTH “BIRT” UPSHIRE, IN MEMORIAM

WHEREAS, on October 7th, 2017, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Mattie Ruth “Birt” UpShire from our midst, and 

WHEREAS, Mattie Ruth Lackland was born to Charles and Annie Bell Lackland on June 2, 1941 in Greenville, MS; and	

WHEREAS, Mattie Ruth was 12 years old when she accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized by her uncle the late Reverend J.F. Redmon, Sr., at Pilgrim Rest Church; and 

WHEREAS, she attended #2 Elementary School and Coleman High School in Greensville, Mississippi; and 

WHERES, in 1950 she met Roosevelt Birt and on October 27, 1960 they were joined in holy matrimony, to this union six children were born; and

WHEREAS, in 1964 , in effort to make a better life for her family she relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where she joined New Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late B.T. Bishop and was instrumental in organizing Genesis Love and Care Church where the late Reverend M.C. Pettie Pastored; and

WHEREAS, Damon Williams numerous television appearances include BET’s Comicview, including his own one hour special, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, The Joyner Sky Show on TV-One and HBO’s P Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy; and

WHEREAS, in 1999 Damon Williams performed for over 300,000 fans as the opening act for the highly Successful Kings of Comedy Tour, establishing him as one the elite comic of the nation; and

WHEREAS, In January of 1982 the church relocated to their present location, 5932-38 W Division Street where the members of the church came together and worked tirelessly to remodel the building, and;
 
WHEREAS, On September 1, 1996, Pastor L. C. Caver resigned as pastor after 27 years of service and October 6, 1996, Rev. John E. Collins Sr. officially became pastor of Great True Vine MBC, and;

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Pastor John E. Collins many ministries have been added, preachers have accepted their call into the ministry, the church has grown in its number of members and the church itself has expanded and been remodeled. The Church has created programs to feed the hungry, help the needy and promote Christian Education, and;

RESOLUTION HONORING OFFICER LEO AUGLE AND OFFICER COLIN RYAN

WHEREAS, On May, 2, 2017, 9th District Chicago Police Officer Leo Augle (Star # 12848) and Chicago Police Officer Colin Ryan (Star #18694) were driving in a covert vehicle conducting gang surveillance; and

WHEREAS, While stopped at the intersection of 4300 South Ashland, two vehicles surrounded Officer Augle and Office Ryan’s  police vehicle and opened fire with high a powered assault rifle; and

WHEREAS, the attackers fired 28 shots, 23 of which struck the officer’s vehicle; and

WHEREAS, Officer Augle sustained a gunshot wound to his back and Officer Ryan sustained a gunshot wound to his arm; and

WHEREAS, While being wounded, both Officer Augle and Officer Ryan returned fire and were later able to provide descriptions of the offenders and the vehicles involved; and 

WHEREAS, the information being provided by the officers led to the arrest of the man who drove the dangerous gunmen; and

WHEREAS, On July 21, 2017, 9th District Chicago Police Officer David Perez (Star #14864) and Chicago Police Officer Victoria Mendoza (Star #14334) were responding to a call of a robbery in progress in the 4300 block of South Ashland; and

WHEREAS, Upon arrival at the scene officer Perez and officer Mendoza observed multiple subjects exiting the business and matching the descriptions given of the possible offenders; and

WHEREAS, When Officer Perez and Officer Mendoza attempted to stop the subjects the offenders turned and began firing multiple rounds in the direction of the officers; and

WHEREAS, Officer Mendoza sustained a gunshot to the knee; and

WHEREAS, Officer Perez continued pursuing offenders on foot while encountering multiple rounds of gunfire; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Ricardo Jimenez, owner of Leslie’s Hair Salon, a local business in the area, emerged from his establishment and observed Officer Mendoza in distress; and

WHEREAS, President (Emeritus) Bobbie L.  Steele was born in Cleveland, Mississippi on October 18, 1937. She completed her formal education in 1954 following her attendance to the illustrious Alabama A&amp; M University in Huntsville, Alabama for two years; and

WHEREAS, Bobbie L. Rodgers migrated to Chicago, IL in 1954 where she soon met the love of her life, Robert Pearl Steele, and was fortunate to have six children (Valerie, Joyce, {Robert}, Byron, Donna, and Elisha), bless this great union; and

WHEREAS, While providing for her family, Bobbie L. Steele attended night school in addition to working full time, eventually earning her degree in Elementary Education from Chicago’s Teacher’s College. Bobbie continued her educational pursuit, ultimately earning a Master’s Degree in Supervision and Administration from Roosevelt University; and

WHEREAS, for twenty years Bobbie L. WHEREAS, born in Detroit, poet Tyehimba Jess came to Cook County after high school to attend the University of Chicago where he earned his bachelor’s degree in public policy in 1991 followed by an MFA from New York University; and

WHEREAS, during his 18 years living in Chicago, Mr. Jess was a two-time member of the Chicago Green Mill Slam team and a prominent voice in Chicago’s poetry scene where he showcased his work as a writer and spoken word performer; and 

WHEREAS, Tyehimba Jess is currently poetry and fiction editor of African American Review and professor of English at the College of Staten Island (New York), having also previously taught at the Juilliard School and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and

HONORING WHITNEY M. YOUNG HIGH SCHOOL DOLPHINS 2017 STATE CHAMPIONS

WHEREAS, members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners are proud to recognize excellence in high school sports; and

WHEREAS, the Cook County Board of Commissioners recognizes the importance of team sports in developing the qualities of respect, collaboration, hard work and dedication in young adults; and

WHEREAS, the Whitney M. Young Dolphins Girls Tennis Team excelled in the sport during the 2016-2017 season with a record of (13-5); and

WHEREAS, on October 28, 2017 the girls varsity tennis team of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School captured the state title along with Stevenson High School; and

WHEREAS, this is a first time in history for any girls team to win the title, Senn High School's boys tennis team was the last Chicago Public Schools team to win the title in 1944; and

WHEREAS, under the direction of Coach Dempsey Willard and Coach Carl Abram the team also won the city championship and the sectional championship; and

WHEREAS, Eric Solorio Academy High School (Solorio) is an outstanding public high school located in the City of Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood; and 

WHEREAS, Solorio has been rated Level 1+ by Chicago Public Schools which is defined as a “nationally competitive school with opportunity to share best practices with others”; and 

WHEREAS, Solorio is renowned as an exemplary high school by ranking within the list of Top 20 “Best Public Schools in Chicago” by Chicago Magazine; and

WHEREAS, Solorio has gained national recognition for its excellence in education by the 2017 U.S. News and World Report, which rated Solorio as a Silver Medal School for its high level of college readiness; and 

WHEREAS, Solorio’s varsity soccer team, the Sun Warriors, won the state soccer Class 2A and 3A Championship as regulated by the Illinois High School Association on November 4, 2017; and

HONORING THE LIFE OF BYRON HARDWICK WILSON

WHEREAS, Byron Wilson represented the best qualities of citizenship and service.  When he died at the age of 98, on October 24th he left behind a family, countless friends and a community enriched for having known him; and

WHEREAS, Byron Wilson was born March 15, 1919 in Huntsville Alabama.  He moved to Evanston in in 1930 and graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1938; and  

WHEREAS, Byron Wilson served his country in the United States Army where he became a drill instructor.  He served in Europe during World War II and later in life he retraced the places where he had served in Europe and developed a fondness for world travel.  He was also a member of the Evanston Traveling Football Club; and 

WHEREAS, Byron Wilson will long be remembered for his success in business.  He owned and operated a successful dry cleaning business and was the night manager at Murphy’s Liquors in Skokie. WHEREAS, L.J. Halbert was born on January 23, 1932 in the Waverly section of West Point, Mississippi, and;

WHEREAS, L.J. Halbert received his education in West Point, Mississippi and then moved to Chicago, Illinois, and; 

WHEREAS, L.J. Halbert married the love of his life, Melva Jean McGee, on September 11, 1954 for 63 years. To this union, three beautiful children were born, Debra, Michael, and Jerome Halbert. L.J. and;

WHEREAS, L.J. Halbert began his work as a laborer in the construction industry along with his brothers, James, Willie, Charles, and Louis and established Waverly Contractors Construction and Demolition Company. Waverly Construction provided incredible service in the Chicago area for over 33 years. L.J also worked at the Chicago Board of Education, and;

WHEREAS, Mr. Carl Walton was born on October 8, 1918 in Yazoo City, MS; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Carl Walton received his formal education from Piney Wood Institute Piney Woods, MS; and

WHEARAS, Carl Walton grew up selling food to support his family. He later worked for “Garner Seed Company” in Yazoo City where he sold and delivered garden materials; and

WHEREAS, Carl Walton and his siblings formed a family singing group “The Walton Brothers”, who were known for their harmonious gospel quartet. Mr. Sam Cook actually sang with them for a short period of time. The Walton Brothers” traveled and performed their music in various cities including Mississippi, Chicago, Indiana, and Missouri. The group was the first to sing on Isabel Joseph Johnson’s WHFC Sunday morning broadcast, currently known as WVON; and

WHEREAS, Carl Walton migrated to Chicago, IL where he enrolled in a plumbing “on the job training” program where he learned the specialty trade. WHEREAS, Pastor Earl Grandberry Sr., the Founding &amp; Senior Pastor of True Rock Ministries, has been the Pastor for 34 years and has made significant contributions to the African-American community and to the residents of Cook County; and
 
WHEREAS, Pastor Grandberry’s family, his wife of 47 years Pastor Clarice Grandberry and their children and grandchild, provides spiritual leadership and serve both the church and the community; and
 
WHEREAS, Senior Pastor Earl Grandberry Sr. and True Rock Ministries, with the help of God,  provide programs that ensure a safe place for children and youth, encourage seniors to active and healthy lifestyles, offer couples classes for married and engaged couples and have a singles program of joy in the service of the Lord; and

WHEREAS, this Thanksgiving, True Rock Ministries will feed 1,000 families, 100 veterans, feed and clothe the homeless, and pass out toys to children.

WHEREAS, Masonic Temple Prince Hall has fought for the abolition of slavery and justice for all citizens beginning with its founder, Prince Hall, 150 years ago; and

WHEREAS, Masonic Temple Prince Hall has a tradition of feeding the needy during Thanksgiving season; and

WHEREAS, on Thursday, November 24, 2017, 4th Ward Alderman Sophia King will join Masonic Temple Prince Hall in celebrating 20,000 meals served over 50 years.
