CELEBRATING THE 75-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOUNT PROSPECT PUBLIC LIBRARY

WHEREAS, in 1930 the Mount Prospect Woman’s Club established Mount Prospect’s first library in a one-room schoolhouse; and

WHEREAS, in 1943 a referendum enabling a tax-supported village library was approved, and the Chicago Public Library began a twenty-year relationship of giving the new library start-up assistance; and

WHEREAS, in 1944 the library moved to a paint store at 115 S. Main Street; and

WHEREAS, in 1950 the first library building was constructed at 14 E. Busse Avenue on land purchased with money donated by organizations and individuals; and

WHEREAS, between 1962 and 1965 two additions were made to the building, tripling the floor space; and

WHEREAS, a new library opened on the site of the old Central School on December 6, 1976; and

WHEREAS, in 1993, as the library celebrated in 50th anniversary, many new services became available to library patrons, including the Readers’ Advisory, a drive-up book drop, and the Internet; and

COOK COUNTY VETERANS DAY RESOLUTION   

WHEREAS, Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally proclaimed holiday on November 11, 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson to honor the end of World War I; and

WHEREAS, November 11, subsequently declared a legal holiday in 1938, was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day”. In 1954, at the urging of veterans organizations, the 1938 Act was amended by replacing Armistice Day with Veterans Day; and

WHEREAS, from the Revolutionary War to the present day, the contributions made to the United States of America by her citizen soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen who stand in our place to defend the freedoms we enjoy cannot be calculated; and

WHEREAS, from 1962 to 1970, Gene Chandler, formerly Eugene Dixon, had 19 songs in the top forty line-ups; and

WHEREAS, Gene Chandler will always be known all over the world as the Duke of Earl, which was the first hit that topped the pop and R&amp;B charts and launched his career in 1962; and

WHEREAS, in 1957, Gene Chandler became a member of the Du-Kays, a rhythm and blues group with a strong rock and roll sound; and

WHEREAS, after a stint in the Army and singing solo in the Army he returned to Chicago in 1960 and rejoined the Du-Kays; and

WHEREAS, Bernice Williams, a young music business manager, heard the group perform and quickly agreed to manage the young group; and

WHEREAS, Bernice Williams arranged an audition with Nat Records in Chicago and the Du­ Kays were offered a recording contract; and

WHEREAS, Gene Chandler turned his attention to the business side of the industry, and decided to put his energy into producing, arranging and assisting other acts; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Bates also creates fashionable styles for the everyday man and woman; and  

WHEREAS, a teen mother herself, Barbara Bates created the Barbara Bates Foundation in 1999 with a purpose to provide prom attire to economically disadvantaged High School Seniors, especially those at alternative schools and teen moms; and 

WHEREAS, to date, more than 500 custom dresses and 200 suits have been gifted to high school students; and

WHEREAS, after a breast cancer diagnosis in 2009, Barbara Bates used her fashion talent to host a fashion show in which all fifty models were breast cancer survivors, raising $50,000 for Mount Sinai Health Systems; and

WHEREAS, the month of October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and

WHEREAS, in the United States about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime; and

WHEREAS, in 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,960 new cases of non-invasive (in situ ) breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, about 2,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in men in 2018.  A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000; and

WHEREAS, Breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. began decreasing in the year 2000, after increasing for the previous two decades. They dropped by 7% from 2002 to 2003 alone; and

WHEREAS, one theory is that this decrease was partially due to the reduced use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by woman after the results of a large study called the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002. HONORING JUDY CARLOS FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MONTH 

WHEREAS, Judy Carlos a Panamanian residing in Chicago since 1969 is the Founder and current Executive Director of Pro- Health Advocates, Inc. since 1996. The programs included, DUI, Substance Abuse treatment and evaluations, Domestic Violence, Anger Management, individual and Group Counseling; and

WHEREAS, The  Pro- Health Advocates, Inc. program received  funding, (PAID) after writing a grant with the Cook County Probation and Social Services, for both Male and Female offenders convicted of Domestic Violence; and

WHEREAS, Judy Carlos received her AA Degree from Montay College, and a Certified Addiction Counseling Certification in 1988. Judy received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Northeastern Illinois University in May of 1999. And in 2001, Judy Carlos received her Master in Social Work from Aurora University in 2001; and

RESOLUTION HONORING STEPHANIE LOVE PATTERSON

WHEREAS, Stephanie Love-Patterson is the Executive Director of Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC) and is a Certified Domestic Violence Professional; and 

WHEREAS, Ms. Love- Patterson oversees program services for CAWC including Greenhouse Shelter, the Humboldt Park Outreach Program, Domestic Violence Services at Haymarket Center, and the Hospital Crisis Intervention Project at John Stroger Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Hospital; and  
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Love-Patterson provides training and technical assistance to various organizations and healthcare professionals throughout the community to help create a coordinated response to domestic violence; and  
 
WHEREAS, Ms. Love-Patterson has been a trained sexual assault advocate since 1985. Some of her professional work include counselor and advocate at A Safe Place Shelter, Rape Victim Advocates’ John H. CELEBRATING THE CAREER OF KEITH KELLEHER 

WHEREAS, Keith Kelleher’s early work in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Detroit in the early 1980s led him to make a life-long commitment to organizing for social and economic justice; and

WHEREAS, in his 39 years of work as a labor and community organizer, Keith Kelleher has pioneered the organization of fast food, home care, child care and other low-wage workers-growing Legacy Local 880 from just seven members in 1983 to over 70,000 members by 2008, and growing SEIU HCIIMK from 83,000 members in 2008 to over 92,000 members by 2014; and winning living wages and first-ever healthcare for tens of thousands of Illinois workers; and

WHEREAS, Keith Kelleher was the Field Director of the national SEIU’s “Homecare Task Force” from 1996-1998, traveling, researching, and house visiting homecare workers in over ten states, beginning the work which led to the organizing of hundreds of thousands of Homecare workers across the country; and

WHEREAS,  Mental Illness Awareness Week shines a light on mental illness, fights stigmas, provides support, and advocates for equal care; and 

WHEREAS, maintaining good mental health is crucial to living a long healthy life, it is important for the well-being of individuals, families, and our communities; and
  
WHEREAS, mental health illnesses are more common than cancer, diabetes, or hearth disease, millions of Americans are living with a mental health condition; and

WHEREAS, it is important to maintain mental health and learn the symptoms of mental illness in order to get help when it is needed; and

WHEREAS, suicide continues to be a leading cause of death among Americans, taking a life every 13 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); and

HONORING MS. DOROTHY JEAN REID ON THE OCCASION OF HER 75TH BIRTHDAY


WHEREAS, Ms. Dorothy Jean Reid was born September 12, 1943 in Sledge, Mississippi, and 

WHEREAS, Ms. Reid began her career at United Airlines in 1968, where she worked more than 35 years in the following positions: reservations, tour agent, customer service agent, international ticketing agent, international ticket trainer, red carpet room associate, cargo etc., and 

WHEREAS, Ms. Reid is a dedicated member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she has sung in the gospel choir and is a member of the United Methodist Women organization and the church visitor for the sick and shut in, and 

WHEREAS, Ms. Reid graduated from Crane Technical High School in Chicago and attended Chicago State University &amp; Wright Jr. College where she studied special education, and

RECOGNIZING OCTOBER AS DOWN SYNDROME ACCEPTANCE MONTH

WHEREAS, October is National Down Syndrome Acceptance Month, Down syndrome is the most frequently occurring chromosomal disorder; and
 
WHEREAS, through the efforts of human and civil rights activists, people with Down Syndrome have the right to live at home, attend their local public schools, get appropriate health care, get married, maintain a job,  lead meaningful, integrated lives and contribute to society in so many wonderful ways; and

WHEREAS, in 2002 Nancy Gianni founded GiGi’s Playhouse in Hoffman Estates after her daughter Gulianna, “GiGi”, was born with Down syndrome; and

WHEREAS, she wanted to change the world view of Down syndrome and send a global message of acceptance for all; and 

WHEREAS, at GiGi’s Playhouse families receive support and receive all the tools their child needs to succeed; and
 
WHEREAS, at GiGi’s Playhouse families have a community committed to empowering them from the time of a prenatal diagnosis to through childhood and into adulthood; and

HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF DION ELIOT MILLER-PÉREZ


WHEREAS, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Dion Eliot Miller-Pérez from our midst on July 26, 2018 at the age of 56; and 
WHEREAS, Dion was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 24, 1961 to Dr. Angela Pérez-Miller and John Miller; and 
WHEREAS, Dion learned his work at the feet of his mother, Dr. Angela Pérez-Miller, an educator and activist and was inspired by her to be a leader and voice for the oppressed; and
WHEREAS, Dion demonstrated to be a smart and caring individual and was later known to be a gentle yet powerful man; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, Dion married his soul mate, Susan Mullen, an artist and longtime art teacher at Wells High School; and
WHEREAS, earlier in life, Dion took a shot at being a political headliner, running for the 12th Ward aldermanic seat, but he found his home behind the scenes, training volunteers and managing campaigns, which suited his natural gift for teaching, building relationships and community organizing; and

CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BETH SHALOM B’NAI ZAKEN ETHIOPIAN HEBREW CONGREGATION


WHEREAS, Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation (Beth Shalom)  will be celebrating their 100 year anniversary “L’Dor V’Dor” (from Generation to Generation) from October 26, 2018 to October 28, 2018; and 
WHEREAS, Beth Shalom is the oldest Temple in the Chicago area serving the Israelite Community; and
WHEREAS, Beth Shalom is a family synagogue that exists as a place of worship for all people of the Hebrew-Israelite faith; and 
WHEREAS, Beth Shalom was established as the Ethiopian Hebrew Association in 1915, by Rabbi Horace Hasan; and
WHEREAS, in 1918, Rabbi David Lasarus and Rabbi Caino Stirson, came to the Chicago area from New York and later joined forces with Rabbi Hasan, and five years later, by their beloved Senior Rabbi Abihu Ben Reuben; and
WHERAS, in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the leadership of the Ethiopian Hebrew community was firmly in the hands of Rabbi Abihu Ben Reuben, Rabbi Lazarus, and Rabbi Louis Green. WHEREAS, Riveredge Hospital, located in Forest Park, Illinois, is among the largest mental health facilities in the region, and

WHEREAS, Riveredge has been serving the needs of the greater Chicagoland area since 1963, and

WHEREAS, since that time, Riveredge has grown to more than 200 beds and has expanded its continuum of care, making treatment possible for all, including children, adolescents and adults, and

WHEREAS, Riveredge is consistently recognized as a Joint Commission Top Performer in its area of expertise, and

WHEREAS, the hospital‘s leadership team is dedicated to identifying the needs of our community and collaborating with other providers and mental health advocates to address those needs, and
