PROPOSED RESOLUTION
CELEBRATING EL DÍA DEL NIÑO IN COOK COUNTY
WHEREAS, Día Del Niño, otherwise known as Day of the Child, is a culturally significant holiday for Mexicans and Mexican Americans; and
WHEREAS, Cook County has a large population of Mexican Americans who have contributed immensely to our county’s culture, economy, and communities; and
WHEREAS, children and their families are highly valued in Mexican culture, and this is reflected in the significance of the day; and
WHEREAS, Día Del Niño is celebrated in Mexico on April 30th; and
WHEREAS, in 1924, Mexican President Alvaro Obregon signed the League of Nations’ Declaration of the Rights of the Child; and
WHEREAS, in 1925, on the one-year anniversary of the signing, Mexico declared the first annual Día Del Niño celebration; and
WHEREAS, Día Del Niño calls on the charity of individuals and organizations to support educational, health, economic, recreational, and cultural opportunities for children; and
WHEREAS, popular festivities include, the giving of gifts, music, pinatas, and games; and
WHEREAS, throughout Cook County, municipalities, organizations, and individuals organize Día Del Niño celebrations every year, including the Town of Cicero, the City of Berwyn, the Cicero Mexican Cultural Committee, and local school districts; and
WHEREAS, Cook County’s Mexican American community honors their children, families, and culture by continuing to celebrate Día Del Niño throughout Cook County; and
WHEREAS, Cook County understands the importance of supporting children and their families, passing legislation to establish a guaranteed income program, forgive medical debt, and fund violence-prevention initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Cook County knows that continued support for education, health, and recreational initiatives for youth are necessary to increase equitable outcomes in their future; and
WHEREAS, Día Del Niño encompasses Cook County’s commitment to supporting youth residents and their families, and calls on our communities to support, protect, and provide for the children of Cook County; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, do hereby honor and celebrate Día Del Niño in April of 2024.
