HONORING MORTON COLLEGE ON THEIR CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY

 

WHEREAS, Morton College first opened its doors on September 15, 1924 with 11 teachers and 76 students under the direction of its first College President Harry Victor Church, who made Morton “a peoples’ college with terminal courses for better citizenship as well as preparation for university”; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College is the second oldest community college in Illinois; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College has evolved from its humble beginnings on the third floor at Morton East High School to its current campus in Cicero, Illinois, allowing the college to have served over a quarter of a million students across Berwyn, Cicero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook and Stickney; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College is committed to its mission of enhancing the quality of life of their diverse community through exemplary teaching and learning opportunities, community service, and life-long learning; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College strives to prepare leaders in all walks of life by offering opportunities for career advancement through six degree programs, 37 certificate programs, and a pathway to transfer to a university for a four-year degree; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College provides programming in the arts, theatre, music, and athletics to foster creativity and unity throughout the region; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College is committed to educational innovation through its university transfer program and expansion of educational opportunities to include career, community, and adult education programs that serve all ages from 8 to 88; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College graduates have gone on to serve our community through advocacy as elected officials, through protection as police and firefighters, and through education teachers; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College graduates provide valuable care for our community as nurses, physical therapist assistants and doctors; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College graduates improve the quality of life for our community members through vital car and heating systems repairs, maintaining our information superhighway, and through the local businesses they have built to meet the needs of our families; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College graduates bring neighbors together through their talents in college and professional sports, music, television, news, and movies; and

 

WHEREAS, Morton College recently started the 2024-2025 academic year with over 5,500 students and the announcement of exciting new exterior campus renovations that will enhance the student experience; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, Cook County congratulates Morton College and its incredible administration, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni for an impressive 100 years of enriching our county through education; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, do hereby congratulate Morton College on their 100th Anniversary in September of 2024.end
