PROPOSED RESOLUTION
MEMORIAL RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MOTHER KHADIJAH FARRAKHAN
WHEREAS, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, called Mother Khadijah Farrakhan from labor to eternal rest on June 27, 2026, at the venerable age of ninety (90) years, bringing to a close a remarkable life distinguished by unwavering faith, steadfast devotion, extraordinary perseverance, and selfless service; and
WHEREAS, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan was born Betsy Ross on November 26, 1935, in Boston, Massachusetts. On September 12, 1953, she married Louis Eugene Walcott, later known to the world as the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. Mother Khadijah later embraced Islam alongside her husband in 1955, adopting the name Khadijah, and throughout more than seven decades exemplified the virtues of humility, discipline, dignity, compassion, and unwavering spiritual conviction. Their seventy-two-year union became a profound testament to enduring love, fidelity, sacrifice, and shared purpose, inspiring generations through its extraordinary longevity and resilience; and
WHEREAS, many revered as the "First Lady of the Nation of Islam" and affectionately known as "Mother Khadijah," she occupied a position of profound respect within one of America's most influential religious organizations. Her quiet strength, moral clarity, and steadfast counsel provided a stabilizing presence that helped sustain the Nation of Islam through decades of growth, challenge, and transformation; and
WHEREAS, beyond her public recognition, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan rendered indispensable service to the Nation of Islam through administrative leadership, organizational stewardship, and financial management, serving as one of the first secretary-treasurers following the organization's reorganization in 1977. Mother Khadijah’s diligence and meticulous dedication helped strengthen the institutional foundation upon which countless programs flourished; and
WHEREAS, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan was an accomplished seamstress, designer, and entrepreneur, who elevated standards of excellence through her craftsmanship by designing distinctive garments and uniforms reflected discipline, dignity, cultural pride, and feminine elegance. Her artistic talents became enduring symbols of identity and excellence within the Nation of Islam and were celebrated throughout the United States and abroad; and
WHEREAS, Mother Khadijah graciously expressed lifelong commitment to women, children, and families through her leadership of educational initiatives, mentorship of women, participation in charitable endeavors, support of youth development programs, and unwavering advocacy for strong families grounded in faith, responsibility, and service. Her influence extended far beyond organizational boundaries and touched countless lives through acts of generosity performed with humility rather than public acclaim; and
WHEREAS, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan addressed the historic Million Woman March in Philadelphia in 1997, encouraging women to embrace purpose, responsibility, faith, and community empowerment while inspiring future generations to recognize the immeasurable value of disciplined leadership and collective progress; and
WHEREAS, As the devoted mother of nine children, grandmother, great-grandmother, mentor, counselor, and spiritual matriarch, Mother Khadijah nurtured not only her own family but also served as a maternal figure to countless individuals who regarded her wisdom, compassion, and quiet fortitude as a source of encouragement and hope; and
WHEREAS, throughout her lifetime, Mother Khadijah Farrakhan demonstrated extraordinary resilience in the face of personal loss and adversity, meeting every challenge with unwavering faith, remarkable grace, and an abiding commitment to serving God, her family, and her community. Her life embodied the enduring principles of sacrifice, humility, perseverance, and unconditional love; and
WHEREAS, Mother Khadijah’s passing occasioned profound sorrow among her beloved family, members of the Nation of Islam, friends, admirers, and countless individuals whose lives were enriched by her example of quiet leadership, steadfast devotion, and compassionate service. Nevertheless, her enduring legacy shall continue to inspire future generations to pursue lives characterized by integrity, faith, service, and moral excellence; and
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, BILL LOWRY, COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER OF THE 3rd DISTRICT, AND TONI PRECKWINKLE, PRESIDENT OF THE COOK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, together with the members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, do hereby honor the extraordinary life, enduring legacy, and immeasurable contributions of Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, extend our deepest condolences to the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the entire Farrakhan family, as well as to the members of the Nation of Islam and all who mourn her passing; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Mother Khadijah Farrakhan's lifelong example of faith, steadfast devotion, compassion, dignity, family leadership, and selfless service shall remain an enduring source of inspiration to the residents of Cook County and to all who strive to strengthen their communities through lives dedicated to principle, sacrifice, and humanity; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be presented to the Farrakhan family as a lasting expression of the profound respect, admiration, and heartfelt sympathy of the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. .
