PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION COMMERMORATING THE 119TH ANNIVERSARY OF CHICAGO LOCAL 0001 OF THE AMERICAN POSTAL WORKERS UNION (APWU)
WHEREAS, Chicago Local 0001 of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) proudly celebrates the 119th Anniversary of its charter, marking more than a century of unwavering commitment to the dignity, safety, and economic security of postal workers and their families; and
WHEREAS, since its founding, Chicago Local 0001 has served as a powerful voice for working people, advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, collective bargaining rights, and the preservation of quality public postal services for residents across Chicago, Cook County, and the nation; and
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service has long been a cornerstone of American democracy, ensuring reliable communication, commerce, and civic participation, and postal workers have played an essential role in connecting communities, strengthening neighborhoods, and supporting economic stability in times of peace, crisis, and national transition; and
WHEREAS, Chicago Local 0001 has demonstrated steadfast leadership in defending the integrity of public postal services, standing at the forefront of efforts to oppose privatization and protect universal mail delivery, including organizing demonstrations, educating the public, and mobilizing workers to safeguard the principle that the United States Mail remains a public trust; and
WHEREAS, throughout its 119-year history, Chicago Local 0001 has upheld the proud traditions of the labor movement-promoting solidarity, advancing worker protections, and advocating for policies that ensure working families have access to safe workplaces, family-sustaining wages, and secure retirements; and
WHEREAS, the members of Chicago Local 0001 have shown resilience and dedication in the face of extraordinary challenges, including economic downturns, natural disasters, and global pandemics, continuing to serve communities with professionalism, reliability, and an unwavering commitment to public service; and
WHEREAS, the legacy of Chicago Local 0001 reflects the enduring belief that when workers organize and stand together, they strengthen not only their workplaces, but also the democratic institutions and communities they serve;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby commemorate and celebrate the 119th Anniversary of Chicago Local 0001 of the American Postal Workers Union, recognizing its historic contributions to the labor movement, its steadfast advocacy for postal workers, and its continued service to the residents of Cook County and the United States; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this honorable body expresses its deepest gratitude to the members, leaders, and retirees of Chicago Local 0001 for their dedication, sacrifice, and enduring commitment to protecting public service, strengthening working families, and advancing the cause of justice for workers everywhere; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be presented to Chicago Local 0001 of the American Postal Workers Union as a symbol of the respect, appreciation, and recognition of the Cook County Board of Commissioners on the occasion of this historic milestone.
