PROPOSED RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Justice Freddrenna M. Lyle has been honored by the Cook County Bar Association at their Legend’s Award Dinner for her diverse and distinguished legal career; and
WHEREAS, Justice Freddrenna Lyle was raised in the Park Manor neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois and attended Park Manor Elementary School and South Shore High School; and
WHEREAS, Judge Lyle earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Illinois at Chicago and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois Chicago John Marshall School of Law. Justice Lyle was admitted to the Illinois Bar Association in 1980; and
WHEREAS, before joining the bench, Judge Lyle served as an Alderman in Chicago’s 6th Ward from 1998 to 2011 and previously worked in private practice for many years both as a solo practitioner and as partner. Simultaneously she created Lyle for Kids a not-for-profit that provided afterschool and summer programming for more than 9000 children; and
WHEREAS, Justice Lyle was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County in Dec. 2011. She presided over cases in Elder Law, Mortgage Foreclosure and was appointed as the Supervising Judge of the Surety Section in June 2022. On December 2, 2023, she was honored with an appointment to the Illinois Appellate Court First District; and
WHEREAS, Justice Lyle is a member and Past President of the Cook County Bar Association, and the Illinois Judicial Council; a Board Member of the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association; and a member of the Black Women Lawyers Assoc., the Illinois Judges Assoc., and the American Judges Assoc. She served on the Supreme Court Judicial Education Committee for several years including her service as co-Chair of the biannual judicial education conference (EdCon). She was elevated to the Illinois Judicial College Board of Trustees in August 2023; and
WHEREAS, Justice Lyle’s memberships have included Park Manor Neighbors, Chatham Avalon Park Community Council, NAACP, and Rainbow/Push; and
WHEREAS, Justice Lyle regularly lectures at Colleges, Law Schools and professional conferences. She is a recipient of many awards including the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Stradford Award, CCBA’s Edward Ming Award, the IJC’s Kenneth E. Wilson Award, the Chicago Defender Distinguished Women Award, the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity’s Monarch Award, the Cook County Bar Association’s Hall of Fame and most recently the Vanguard Award presented by the Chicago Bar Association; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby recognize and honor Justice Freddrenna M. Lyle for her decades of service to the residents of Cook County, her exemplary contributions to the legal profession, and her steadfast commitment to public service; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the permanent record of the proceedings of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, and that a suitable copy of this Resolution be presented to Justice Freddrenna M. Lyle as a token of our esteem and gratitude.
