Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION COREY WINCHESTER WHEREAS, Corey Winchester (he/him) is a Chicago-based, Philly-born educator whose career spans nearly 15 years of stewardship and service in various roles as a veteran classroom teacher, professional developer, coach, mentor, coordinator, fellow, consultant, learning designer, writer, and student. WHEREAS, his stewardship as a Queer Black male educator is attributed to his own learning and growth as he centers his work around designing, creating, and sustaining more humanizing and liberatory learning environments so that individuals like him (namely Black, Brown, Indigenous and LGBTQ+ folks), who have historically experienced and are currently navigating marginalization, can individually and collectively thrive. COREY WINCHESTER

 

WHEREAS, Corey Winchester (he/him) is a Chicago-based, Philly-born educator whose career spans nearly 15 years of stewardship and service in various roles as a veteran classroom teacher, professional developer, coach, mentor, coordinator, fellow, consultant, learning designer, writer, and student.

 

WHEREAS, his stewardship as a Queer Black male educator is attributed to his own learning and growth as he centers his work around designing, creating, and sustaining more humanizing and liberatory learning environments so that individuals like him (namely Black, Brown, Indigenous and LGBTQ+ folks), who have historically experienced and are currently navigating marginalization, can individually and collectively thrive.

 

WHEREAS, Corey began his professional career as a Teaching Fellow with Breakthrough Collaborative in Providence, RI in the summer of 2008. Then hired by Evanston Township High School to teach History/Social Sciences upon graduation from Northwestern University in 2010.

 

WHEREAS, Corey is recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for his work including the Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2019, Illinois History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in 2020 and recognized as an Excellent Early Career Educator by the Illinois State Board of Education in 2013.

 

WHEREAS, Corey earned a Masters of Education in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies from Loyola University Chicago, while teaching at ETHS in 2013 and honored by Loyola University Chicago's School of Education in 2016 with a Distinguished Alumni Award for his work as Staff Coordinator of Students Organized Against Racism (SOAR). The student-led group at ETHS committed to anti-racism, where learning about activism, leadership development, history and identity are centered. Corey also received a Masters of Arts in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University.

 

WHEREAS, He has also been recognized for his service as a member of the Board of Directors of Evanston Scholars. Corey supports initiatives at the Golden Apple Foundation as Scholar Institute Curriculum Coordinator, at Northwestern University and Saint Louis University as Adjunct Faculty in their respective Schools of Education, and as Advocate in Residence for the Aspen Institute's Aspen Young Leaders Fellowship.

 

WHEREAS, He serves on the Board of Directors at the McGaw YMCA in Evanston and is the Founder and Lead Consultant of House of Winchester Learning Designs. He has also held appointments with KIPP Philadelphia Charter School, Northwestern Academy for Chicago Public Schools and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

 

WHEREAS, Corey currently works part-time at ETHS in the Office of Equity while he completes his PhD in Learning Sciences at Northwestern University.

 

WHEREAS, Corey lives with his partner, Jon, who he is eternally grateful for as well as, his parents, siblings, extended family, ancestors, chosen family, friends, former and current students, and first grade teacher, Mrs. Gray, for contributing to who he is, and who he is becoming.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, do hereby honor and celebrate Mr. Corey Winchester during Black History Month 2024. This resolution reaffirms our commitment to recognizing and commemorating the indelible impact of African Americans on our community and the broader tapestry of American history.
