PROPOSED RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JUNE 2026 AS DR. GREGORY SARLO PRIDE MONTH
WHEREAS, Dr. Gregory Sarlo founded Psychological Consulting in 1987 located in the Lakeview area of Chicago, IL; and
WHEREAS, Psychological Consulting was founded with the mission to recognize the value of every person and a commitment to truth, wholeness, and compassion; and
WHEREAS, Psychological Consulting has focused on providing psychological services to diverse populations, especially the LGBTQIA+ communities, since 1995, as well as cooperative treatment of HIV/AIDS impacted persons; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo began his professional life working primarily with the HIV-impacted community and continued to specialize in helping individuals with coming out issues and other challenges related to sexual orientation; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo received his Doctor of Psychology in 1999 from Adler University and went on to teach assessment and ethics there as well as chair the University’s Master of Arts and Counseling program until 2010; and
WHEREAS, in 2010, Dr. Sarlo began teaching graduate studies at Midwestern University’s Psy.D. Program in the Behavioral Medicine Department and taught courses including human sexuality, assessment, and advanced psychotherapy; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo was also elected as President of the Illinois Psychological Association (IPA) in 2010 and went on to serve for two terms presiding over the IPA Council and chairing two annual conventions; and
WHEREAS, he served the Greater Chicago area with his work on the IPA’s Legislative Co-Chair since 2015; and
WHEREAS, he was later elected as Treasurer of the IPA Council from 2020 to 2021; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo served on the American Psychological Association Executive Committee Division 44 (Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity) from 2011 to 2023 and was elected as a President of that Division; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo served as the Clinical Director and Board President of the Illinois Psychological Association Psychology’s Internship Consortium since 2009, focusing on quality training opportunities for doctoral psychology interns; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo was appointed as a Board Member of the Des Plaines Library Board in 2012; and
WHEREAS, he has since been elected as the Library Board’s President every year since 2013;
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo has worked at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for the last eight years, including serving as the Co-chair of its Ethics Committee since 2018 and as the Chief of Psychology since 2023; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo was instrumental in the work with Des Plaines in raising the Pride Flag every June since 2021; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo was the loving husband to Dr. James “Jim” Allen Reeder for 27 years before Dr. Allen’s passing in 2019; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo married his adoring partner Dr. Daniel Brewer, also of Psychological Consulting, in 2021; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sarlo has been a monumental force in the LGBTQIA+ community with his incredible advocacy and dedication to uplifting the people he works with; and
WHEREAS, in January of this year, Dr. Sarlo was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive case of both pancreatic and liver cancer; and
WHEREAS, as of June 8th, after a lengthy and hard-fought battle, Dr. Sarlo and his care team made the decision to transition him into hospice care; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby recognize June 2026 as Dr. Gregory Sarlo Pride Month in honor of his legacy of integrity, advocacy, and care for all those he has worked with and served over the course of his lifetime; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Dr. Sarlo's legacy of care and attention in psychology will live on through his loving husband Dr. Daniel Brewer; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and suitable copies be tendered to the family of Dr. Gregory Sarlo.
