PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF FIDENCIO SÁNCHEZ
WHEREAS, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Fidencio Sánchez from our midst on November 6, 2019 at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sánchez was born in Morales, México on November 16, 1926; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sánchez migrated to Chicago in 1990 and became a longtime resident of the Little Village neighborhood on Chicago’s Southwest side; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sánchez was known to be a hardworking provider for his family. He made his living selling popsicles - known in Spanish as paletas - for more than two decades; and
WHEREAS, his indefatigable work ethic, dedication, and generous heart charmed residents; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sánchez spent 8 hours a day, 6 days a week push his cart up and down major avenues and side streets in Little Village during the summer months to earn $50 to $60 a day; and
WHEREAS, he also spent the winter months selling candies and churros; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sánchez build a reputation of being an all-around good person who cared deeply about his community; and
WHEREAS, in 2016, a Little Village native, Joel Cervantes Macias, was visiting his old neighborhood when he saw Mr. Sánchez struggling to push his cart; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Macias snapped a photo of Mr. Sánchez and posted it to social media outlets, instantly drawing sympathy from thousands of Mr. Sánchez’s former customers who started a GoFundMe campaign; and
WHEREAS, the viral crowdfunding campaign, eventually raised nearly $400,000 from more than 17,000 donors from about 60 countries that allowed Mr. Sánchez to retire and spend his twilight years in peace; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sánchez is survived by his wife and best friend Eladia Sánchez, his children, grandchildren, and leaves behind a legacy of perseverance and generosity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby offer its deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the family and many friends of Fidencio Sánchez, and joins them in sorrow at this time of loss; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be tendered to the family of Fidencio Sánchez, so that his memory may be honored and ever cherished.
