PROPOSED RESOLUTION
COMMEMORATING THE 2024 VISIT OF GUSTAVO FRANCISCO PETRO URREGO
WHEREAS, Colombian President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego visited the United States in the fall of 2024; and
WHEREAS, President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego spoke at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York; and
WHEREAS, President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego used this moment to address concerns around global issues such as war, environmental collapse, and inequity that plague all of humanity, urging mankind to rise up and take action; and
WHEREAS, during his visit President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego also stopped by Cook County to participate in a series of Colombian cultural events revolving around the National Day of the Colombian Immigrant; and
WHEREAS, October 10th, 2019 was commemorated as the first National Day of the Colombian Migrant; and
WHEREAS, every 10th of October is used to recognize the efforts Colombians around the world make to maintain their links to their homeland while also contributing to the economic, cultural and social wealth of their new countries; and
WHEREAS, since the 1950s, the Colombian population in Illinois has grown from 3,500 in 1970 to over 100,000 Colombians representing regions across Colombia and spanning various neighborhoods in the state of Illinois; and
WHEREAS, President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego has continuously facilitated conversation around migration and has met with several elected officials such as the Mayor of the City of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, and United States Congressman Jonathan Jackson on the matter; and
WHEREAS, on February 28, 2009, the city of Chicago, a Cook County municipality, signed a sister city agreement with Bogotá, Colombia, to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation through citizen diplomacy; and
WHEREAS, now, more than ever, we must solidify our existing partnerships and build on the international allyship that unites all of humanity; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners, do hereby commemorate the 2024 visit of Colombian President Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego and look to solidify the relationships between Cook County and the Republic of Colombia; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Consul General Diego Alexander Angulo Marínez of the Colombian Consulate in Cook County and Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, President of the Republic of Colombia.
