PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING DR. LÁZARO LÓPEZ AS HE CONCLUDES HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE WITH HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT 214 AND RECOGNIZING HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO PUBLIC EDUCATION, COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS, AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
WHEREAS, Dr. Lázaro López concludes his distinguished service with High School District 214 after a career that has shaped public education, college and career readiness, and opportunity for thousands of students in northwest Cook County and across Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López’s life and career reflect the promise of public education, community college access, military service, and hard work, having served in the United States Army, begun his postsecondary journey at College of DuPage, and gone on to earn degrees from Illinois State University, Roosevelt University, and Aurora University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López began his District 214 career as an English teacher at John Hersey High School and later served the district as Principal of Wheeling High School, Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Interim Superintendent, and Executive Director of the District 214 Education Foundation and Career Pathways; and
WHEREAS, at Wheeling High School, Dr. López helped launch District 214’s first career pathways in manufacturing and health care, expanded dual-credit opportunities, supported STEM programming, strengthened business and community partnerships, and helped students connect classroom learning to meaningful futures; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López was recognized for his innovation and leadership as the recipient of the 2010 Dr. Elizabeth Ennis Innovative Educator Award, the 2012 Illinois Principals Association North Cook Region High School Principal of the Year, and the 2013 Illinois Principals Association High School Principal of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López’s leadership helped transform District 214 into a nationally recognized model for career-connected learning, where students are encouraged to explore their interests, earn early college credit, gain industry credentials, participate in internships and apprenticeships, and graduate with a clearer sense of purpose and direction; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López’s work has helped thousands of young people in Cook County save time and money, reduce barriers to postsecondary education, and prepare for careers that support economic mobility, family-sustaining wages, and a stronger middle class; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López has also served the State of Illinois as Chair of the Illinois Community College Board, where from 2015 to 2025 he helped advance policies focused on educational equity, seamless student transitions, workforce development, dual credit, and student success; and
WHEREAS, through his service on the Illinois Community College Board, Dr. López strengthened the bridge between high schools and community colleges, recognizing that community colleges are essential engines of opportunity for working families, adult learners, first-generation college students, and communities across Cook County and Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López has consistently championed the belief that every student should graduate with more than a diploma, including the knowledge, confidence, experiences, and support needed to make informed choices about college, careers, service, and life; and
WHEREAS, Dr. López’s career has been defined by innovation, partnership, student-centered leadership, and a deep commitment to ensuring that public education remains a pathway to opportunity and upward mobility;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby honor Dr. Lázaro López as he concludes his distinguished service with High School District 214 and recognize his outstanding contributions to public education, college and career readiness, workforce development, and the students and families of Cook County; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Lázaro López for helping shape the futures of thousands of students, strengthening pathways to the middle class, and advancing a more relevant, connected, and opportunity-rich model of public education; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Lázaro López as an expression of the Board’s appreciation, respect, and best wishes.
