WHEREAS, the Sheriff’s Department has demonstrated leadership and commitment to protect and provide a safe environment to the residents of Cook County through significant community programming; and

WHEREAS, programs such as the Lightsaver Program offers taillight repairs to the community, minimizing the risk of traffic stops for minor infractions; and

WHEREAS, over 625 vehicles have had bulbs replaced at no cost since the department launched the initiative; and

WHEREAS, this program encourages road safety by certifying vehicles are well maintained and made visible to other drivers, preventing accidents from occurring; and

WHEREAS, the Catalytic Converter Program addresses the issue of catalytic converter thefts, causing financial hardships to the vehicle owners; and

WHEREAS, this program involves painting and laser etching each converter with the vehicle's identification number, in which stolen parts would be easier to trace, therefore minimizing theft, with over 984 vehicles serviced since the program’s inception; and

WHEREAS, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office has established a Vehicular Hijacking Dashboard to identify criminal patterns and assist residents by providing them the measures to prevent them from being victims of carjackings; and

WHEREAS, this program helps reduce the span of time a vehicle is recovered, leading to 78% of vehicles being retrieved within 74 hours, representing a 65% decrease since its establishment in 2021; and

WHEREAS, these programs are all supported by robust community engagement initiatives such as youth mentoring and violence prevention, among other community events that seek to prevent individuals from becoming involved in the judicial system; and

WHEREAS, this approach significantly leads to the minimization of incidents and enhances public safety and confidence between the community and the Sheriff’s Department;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize and commends the Sheriff’s Department for its service and dedication to the well-being of our community through these aforementioned programs; and
