Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING PILSEN NEIGHBORS COMMUNITY COUNCIL (PNCC) ON ITS 70TH ANNIVERSARY WHEREAS, Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) is a not-for-profit community organization based in the Pilsen neighborhood, within the 7th District of Cook County; and WHEREAS, in 1954, on Chicago's near west side, PNCC emerged as Eastern European immigrants banded together to confront their community's most pressing needs; and WHEREAS, in the late 1960's and early 1970's, the Pilsen neighborhood underwent a major demographic change with a dramatic influx of newly arriving immigrants from Mexico; and WHEREAS, PNCC organizes, engages, and activates people and resources to positively address community issues facing Pilsen- most notably in the areas of education, housing, healthcare, social justice, and immigration reform; and WHEREAS, PNCC provides leadership training that empowers organizations and members of the community to effectively advocate for themselves, their families...

PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING PILSEN NEIGHBORS COMMUNITY COUNCIL (PNCC) ON ITS 70TH ANNIVERSARY

 

WHEREAS, Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) is a not-for-profit community organization based in the Pilsen neighborhood, within the 7th District of Cook County; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1954, on Chicago’s near west side, PNCC emerged as Eastern European immigrants banded together to confront their community’s most pressing needs; and

 

WHEREAS, in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, the Pilsen neighborhood underwent a major demographic change with a dramatic influx of newly arriving immigrants from Mexico; and

 

WHEREAS, PNCC organizes, engages, and activates people and resources to positively address community issues facing Pilsen- most notably in the areas of education, housing, healthcare, social justice, and immigration reform; and

 

WHEREAS, PNCC provides leadership training that empowers organizations and members of the community to effectively advocate for themselves, their families, and for the benefit of the community as a whole; and

 

WHEREAS, PNCC has been instrumental in bringing new institutions and capital improvements to the neighborhood from the allocation and construction of Harrison Park Fieldhouse, West Side Technical Institute (now Arturo Velazquez), and the allocation of $26 million in City infrastructure funds between 1995-1999; and

 

WHEREAS, PNCC organized a fundraising event to celebrate the construction of Benito Juárez High School in 1995 and helped in the planning and development of Alivio Medical Center, a not-for-profit community health center located in the Heart of Chicago and serving Pilsen, Little Village, and Berwyn; and

 

WHEREAS, PNCC has worked with businesses who recognize Pilsen as a fertile marketplace, as well as educators, the community, and the government, to improve the health and welfare of the community; and

 

WHEREAS, Fiesta del Sol, organized by PNCC, has become the largest festival in the Midwest, bringing live entertainment, local art, a variety of food, carnival rides, a children’s area, educational resources for parents and youth, soccer games and much more; and

 

WHEREAS, the Fiesta del Sol brought 1 million people to the neighborhood in 1995 to enjoy Latino music, food, and entertainment; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2022, PNCC celebrated the 50 years of Fiesta del Sol; and

 

WHEREAS, PNCC has served as a resource and advocate for the Pilsen community for years.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, The Cook County Board President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby congratulate the staff, volunteers, and supporters of Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) on its 70th Anniversary; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, this text be spread upon the proceedings of this Honorable Body and that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Pilsen Neighbors Community Council (PNCC) in honor of its outstanding achievements.
