Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF JUJU LIEN WHEREAS, Juju Lien was born January 13, 1947 in China, raised in Taiwan and later moved to Chicago; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien was a community activist, champion of human rights, and trailblazer in Chicago's Asian American Community for nearly 50 years; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien served as Executive Director of the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) and the Asian American Institute (now Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago), where she advocated for equal justice for Chicago's Asian American refugees and immigrants; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien retired in 2020 from the Social Security Administration where she served for 21 years; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien was a long time feminist and an advocate for gender equity. PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF JUJU LIEN

 

WHEREAS, Juju Lien was born January 13, 1947 in China, raised in Taiwan and later moved to Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien was a community activist, champion of human rights, and trailblazer in Chicago’s Asian American Community for nearly 50 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien served as Executive Director of the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) and the Asian American Institute (now Asian Americans Advancing Justice Chicago), where she advocated for equal justice for Chicago’s Asian American refugees and immigrants; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien retired in 2020 from the Social Security Administration where she served for 21 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien was a long time feminist and an advocate for gender equity. She was involved with Chicago’s Foundation for Women since 1985, supporting fundraising and advocacy for women and girls; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien was a trailblazer and mentor for Asian American advocates, leaders and elected officials across Chicago, Cook County and Illinois; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien was a devoted wife to her husband of 40 years, Robert Cross, a Chicago Tribune reporter and award-winning travel writer, who preceded her in death; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien is survived by her daughter Amy Cross (Matthew), and her pride and joy, grandson Leon, and will be lovingly remembered by her brothers Martin Lien (Lee) and Kai Lee (Jane), nieces Jing Ting Hammond (Steve), Jing Dee Lien (John), Jing Yee Curtiss (Kirk), Katie Lee, and and her grandnieces and grandnephews Zoe, Calvin, Norah, and Harper; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Lien will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by the family she chose: her countless friends in Chicago and around the world; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, does hereby honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Juju Lien; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Juju Lien, a symbol of our respect, admiration, and heartfelt condolences.
