 RECOGNIZING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VILLAGE OF RICHTON PARK

WHEREAS, the Village of Richton Park proudly celebrates its 100th Anniversary in 2026, marking a century of growth, resilience, community pride, and unwavering commitment to progress since its incorporation on June 8, 1926; and

WHEREAS, long before its incorporation, the land that would become Richton Park served as an important crossroads for Indigenous peoples, with the historic Sauk Trail functioning as a significant route used by the Sauk and Potawatomi peoples for travel, trade, and connection between settlements and sacred areas across the region; and

WHEREAS, Richton Park’s history is deeply tied to the broader American story of freedom and opportunity, with historical accounts identifying portions of the region as part of the Underground Railroad, offering refuge and hope to enslaved Africans and African Americans seeking liberation and safe passage toward freedom in Canada; and

WHEREAS, the arrival of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1852 established a transportation and economic hub where the rail line intersected with Sauk Trail, laying the foundation for the future development of a thriving agricultural settlement that would later become the Village of Richton Park; and

WHEREAS, in 1926, following the electrification of the Illinois Central Railroad suburban line, local residents officially incorporated the Village of Richton Park, establishing a municipality rooted in hard work, civic engagement, and a shared vision for growth and opportunity; and

WHEREAS, Richton Park evolved from a modest railroad and farming community surrounded by agricultural lands into a vibrant and diverse suburban municipality, experiencing substantial growth during the latter half of the twentieth century as families and businesses made the community their home; and

WHEREAS, over the past century, the Village of Richton Park has remained steadfast in promoting economic opportunity, educational advancement, public safety, environmental stewardship, neighborhood development, cultural diversity, and a high quality of life for its residents; and

WHEREAS, the Centennial Celebration, beginning in January 2026 and continuing throughout the year, highlights Richton Park’s rich history, dynamic present, and promising future through community storytelling, historical exhibits, public art, commemorative initiatives, cultural programming, resident engagement activities, and signature events designed to unite generations in celebration; and

WHEREAS, the Centennial Celebration theme, “A Century of Community, Progress, Promise,” reflects Richton Park’s enduring spirit and collective commitment to honoring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the future; and

WHEREAS, Village leadership, residents, businesses, faith institutions, educators, civic organizations, and community stakeholders have contributed to the continued success and vitality of Richton Park, building a community rooted in resilience, inclusion, and civic pride; and

WHEREAS, the Cook County Board of Commissioners recognizes this once-in-a-lifetime milestone as an opportunity to celebrate the remarkable transformation of Richton Park and honor those whose contributions shaped the Village’s first century while inspiring future generations to continue its legacy of progress and unity;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby recognize and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Richton Park, honoring its extraordinary history, enduring resilience, and continued commitment to community, progress, and opportunity; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners congratulates the residents, elected officials, businesses, institutions, and community partners of Richton Park on this historic centennial milestone and extends best wishes for continued prosperity and success for generations to come; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that a suitable copy be presented to the Village of Richton Park as a symbol of Cook County’s respect, admiration, and appreciation for one hundred years of service and community-building.
