PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF REVEREND DR. LEROY SANDERS
WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Leroy Sanders, Pastor Emeritus of Kenwood United Church of Christ, passed away on December 13, 2024, at the age of 91, leaving an enduring legacy of faith, service, and love. Reverend Sanders legacy continues to inspire those who knew him; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders is widely regarded as a "gentle giant," whose towering 6’1” presence was matched only by his immense spirit and unwavering commitment to serving God, his family, and his community; and
WHEREAS, born and raised in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Reverend Sanders grew up with a deep sense of compassion, community, and purpose. Reverend Sanders’ values guided his lifelong mission. Reverend Sanders earned his bachelor's degree from Chicago State University and theological training from the Chicago Theological Seminary, preparing him for a ministry to transform countless lives; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders embarked on his journey of faith under the mentorship of prominent spiritual leaders, including Reverend William Knighten, Reverend Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, and Reverend B. Herbert Martin. In 1981, Reverend Sanders assumed leadership as Senior Pastor of Kenwood United Church of Christ, revitalizing a congregation of fewer than 20 members into a vibrant and thriving community of faith; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders spearheaded initiatives making Kenwood United Church of Christ a beacon of hope in the community. Reverend Sanders’ work encompassed affordable healthcare, youth programs, access to nutritious food, and recreational opportunities, embodying his commitment to addressing the needs of those he serves. Under Reverend Sanders’ guidance, the church’s soup kitchen provided thousands of meals to individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty, offering nourishment, dignity, and fellowship; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders founded the Norma Jean Sanders Health Clinic in 2001, ensuring underserved residents receive free, personalized medical care. Despite challenges, the clinic remains a cornerstone of the community, addressing critical health needs and offering hope under the leadership of Dr. Maurice “Mo” Brownlee; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders founded the Norma Jean Sanders Health Clinic in 2001, ensuring underserved residents receive free, personalized medical care. Despite challenges, the clinic remains a cornerstone of the community, addressing critical health needs and offering hope under the leadership of Dr. Maurice “Mo” Brownlee; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders advocated tirelessly for social justice through his involvement with the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO), fighting for fair housing, resisting displacement, and supporting educational initiatives for youth. Reverend Sanders’ commitment to equity and empowerment left an indelible mark on the community; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders exemplified love and devotion to family, fulfilling a promise to his late wife, Norma Jean Sanders, by adopting and raising their youngest daughter’s three children. This selfless act underscored Reverend Sanders’ unwavering dedication to family and his role as a pillar of strength and guidance; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders inspired generations with his handwritten sermons, profound wisdom, and purposeful living. His favorite saying, “Be careful about digging ditches because you might be the one to fall in,” reflects his emphasis on integrity, humility, and kindness; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders’ work and contributions are widely recognized, yet he remained humble, choosing forgiveness and compassion even in the face of challenges. Reverend Sanders’ life exemplified the resilience and grace of a true servant-leader; and
WHEREAS, Reverend Sanders is survived by his five (5) children, nineteen (19) grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy of faith, love, and service; and
NOW, THEREFORE, WE, BILL LOWRY, COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER OF THE 3rd DISTRICT, AND TONI PRECKWINKLE, PRESIDENT OF THE COOK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONER, honors the extraordinary life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Leroy Sanders. His unwavering commitment to faith, family, and community continues to uplift and inspire, ensuring that his impact endures for generations to come; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution are presented to the family of Reverend Dr. Leroy Sanders as a testament to his profound contributions to Office of Cook County Commissioner Bill Lowry 3rd. District.
