PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF LIZZIE MAE MAULDIN-MCCALPIN
WHEREAS, we gather to celebrate the extraordinary life and unwavering spirit of Lizzie Mae Mauldin-McCalpin, born on May 19, 1935, in Greensboro, Alabama, a treasured daughter of the late Louis J. (“LJ”) Sr. and Melvina (Vina) Beverly Mauldin, whose love and teachings indelibly shaped the foundation of her life; and
WHEREAS, affectionately known as “Baby Sister”, Lizzie Mae held a cherished place among her siblings: the late Minnie Lee Dillard (“Tee Tee”), the late Willie J. Mauldin Sr. (“Skinner”), the late James Mauldin, Louis J. Mauldin Jr. (“Mack”), and Ephraim Mauldin Sr. (“Jaybird”). Lizzie Mae exemplified love, strength, and compassion as the heart of her family. Lizzie Mae’s legacy continues to inspire generations; and
WHEREAS, Lizzie Mae’s spiritual journey began early at Salem MB Church in Greensboro, Alabama, where she accepted Christ, was baptized at the age of 13, and sang in the church choir. Lizzie Mae’s steadfast faith carried her throughout her life and blossomed further when she joined Mt. Sinai Deliverance Church in Chicago, becoming a beacon of devotion, service, and faithfulness; and
WHEREAS, a 1955 graduate of Hale County Training School, Lizzie Mae radiated joy and enthusiasm as a cheerleader for the Mighty Trojans and a majorette for the school’s marching band. Lizzie Mae’s commitment to excellence and ability to inspire those around her marked the beginning of her lifelong legacy of grace and leadership; and
WHEREAS, in 1955, Lizzie Mae relocated to Chicago to join her high school sweetheart, Charles McCalpin Sr. On June 14, 1955, they began a union blessed with six children: Charles Jr., Raymond (both of whom preceded her in death), Monica Vanessa, Shelia Jasmine, Bonita, and later, Veda LaShay McCalpin. Lizzie Mae exemplified boundless love, resilience, and devotion as a mother, shaping her children’s lives with care and wisdom; and
WHEREAS, Lizzie Mae built a career in the food service industry, bringing joy to countless lives through her culinary artistry. Her tenure at Daley’s Restaurant, Harvey Collins Barbeque I & II, and as a sorter at Bell and Howell showcased her dedication, adaptability, and tireless work ethic. Even in retirement, Lizzie Mae continued to embody resilience and grace; and
WHEREAS, at Mt. Sinai Deliverance Church, Lizzie Mae’s faith blossomed as she served as the President of the Choir and Mother of the Church under Pastor Willie Hill and later Pastor Sadie Hill. Lizzie Mae’s passion for cooking became a ministry in itself, as she tirelessly raised funds for the choir through her legendary meals, feeding not just bodies but also souls; and
WHEREAS, a proud member of the Greensboro Alabama Social Club of Chicago, Lizzie Mae embraced her roots and celebrated her heritage with joy and pride. Known for her warmth, generosity, and infectious spirit, Lizzie Mae had a unique gift of making everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. Lizzie Mae’s sayings- “If you’re eating and don’t have enough to share, don’t eat it,” “I feel like a million and ain’t got a penny,” and “I know that’s right”-reflected her wit, humility, and boundless love for others; and
WHEREAS, Lizzie Mae cherished her roles as a matriarch, friend, neighbor, and mentor. Lizzie Mae found immense joy in cooking, grilling, fishing, dancing, and solving crossword puzzles. Lizzie Mae’s home became a sanctuary of love and laughter for her family, friends, and community, including the 79th Carpenter “Swanson’s Way” Block Club, Parkside Elementary, South Shore High School, and the office of Alderman David Moore; and
WHEREAS, on December 31, 2024, Lizzie Mae was called to eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and perseverance. She is survived by her devoted daughters, Jasmine, Monica, Bonita, and Veda (Nathaniel Fahey); her loving brothers, Louis J. (Grace) Mauldin, Ephraim (Barbara) Mauldin, and Robert (Della) Lawson; three granddaughters, Aleshia Waites, Sasha Cooper, and Noel Fahey; two great-granddaughters, Dalilah Waites and Zariah Cooper; one great-grandson, Asa Waites; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, NOW, THEREFORE, WE, BILL LOWRY, COOK COUNTY COMMISSIONER OF THE 3rd DISTRICT, AND TONI PRECKWINKLE, PRESIDENT OF THE COOK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONER, that we honor the luminous life of Lizzie Mae Mauldin-McCalpin, celebrating her extraordinary contributions as a mother, sister, friend, church leader, and pillar of her community. Her indomitable spirit and unwavering love have left an indelible mark on all who were privileged to know her.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners extends its deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and community, and pledges to honor her memory by carrying forward the values of generosity, compassion, and service that she so ardently embodied;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution be presented to the family of Lizzie Mae Mauldin-McCalpin as a lasting tribute to her extraordinary life and unparalleled legacy to Office of Cook County Commissioner Bill Lowry 3rd. District.end
