PROPOSED RESOLUTION
CELEBRATING DOUG COLLINS AND HIS INDUCTION TO THE NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME
WHEREAS, former Chicago Bulls head coach, and Glenview resident, Doug Collins will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the 2024 Hall of Fame class; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins was born in Christopher, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins grew up in Benton, Illinois, where he enjoyed a successful high school basketball career at Benton Consolidated High School; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins attended Illinois State University where he continued to hone his basketball skills; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins was first drafted into the NBA in 1973 by the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played for eight seasons; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins was named as an NBA All-Star four times in his career; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins retired as an NBA player in 1981 after a series of injuries; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins was a prolific coach, leading some of the most preeminent teams in the league; and
WHEREAS, began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by Arizona State; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins became head coach of the Chicago Bulls in May of 1986, during which time he coached third-season phenom, Michael Jordan; and
WHEREAS, under Doug Collins' guidance, the Bulls made their first Eastern Conference finals appearance in 15 years; and
WHEREAS, Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf noted his special accomplishments, crediting Doug Collins' leadership as laying the foundation for the Bulls' 1990s dynasty; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins went on to coach the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Philadelphia 76ers before stepping away to spend more time with family; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins had a storied broadcasting career analyzing games for various media networks, including commentating for NBC's basketball coverage at the 2008 Olympics; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins received the Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009 for his broadcast work; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins has been nominated for four Sports Emmys; and
WHEREAS, in September of 2017, Doug Collins joined the Chicago Bulls once again as a senior advisor of basketball operations; and
WHEREAS, Doug Collins will join the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Class of 2024, taking place on Sunday, October 13, at Springfield Symphony Hall in Massachusetts; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby celebrate, commemorate, and congratulate Doug Collins on this momentous achievement as he prepares for his historic induction into the NBA Hall of Fame; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of the same be tendered to Doug Collins and his family as a means of conveying our pride and gratitude for this momentous achievement.
