Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MARJORIE MANCHEN FOR RECEIVING THE GUERIN PREP SISTER FRANCES ALMA MCMANUS AWARD WHEREAS, the Sister Frances Alma McManus Award was established in 1989 in honor of the first principal of Mother Theodore Guerin High School (now Guerin Prep); and WHEREAS, the McManus Award honors those who show achievement through service to their community and/or through their career; and WHEREAS, Margie Manchen graduated from Mother Guerin in 1978, Guerin's largest class; and WHEREAS, Margie Manchen returned to serve nine years on the Guerin Alumnae Board, including a term as its chair and president, and later served an additional ten years as a director on the Guerin College Prep Board of Directors; and WHEREAS, Margie Manchen graduated from Western Illinois University with degrees in political science, law enforcement administration, and French. PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING MARJORIE MANCHEN FOR RECEIVING THE GUERIN PREP SISTER FRANCES ALMA MCMANUS AWARD

 

WHEREAS, the Sister Frances Alma McManus Award was established in 1989 in honor of the first principal of Mother Theodore Guerin High School (now Guerin Prep); and

 

WHEREAS, the McManus Award honors those who show achievement through service to their community and/or through their career; and

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen graduated from Mother Guerin in 1978, Guerin’s largest class; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen returned to serve nine years on the Guerin Alumnae Board, including a term as its chair and president, and later served an additional ten years as a director on the Guerin College Prep Board of Directors; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen graduated from Western Illinois University with degrees in political science, law enforcement administration, and French. Margie attributes her interest in the French language and culture to the head of Guerin’s language department, the beloved late Marilyn Hejnosz; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen earned her Juris Doctorate at Northern Illinois University’s College of Law; and

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen was previously a partner with the law firm, O’Donnell, Grady & Manchen; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen has also practiced in River Grove with her husband of twenty years, Bart A. Smith, and father-in-law, Harry J. Smith, Jr.; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen was elected village clerk in the Village of River Grove in 2009, winning reelection in 2013 and 2017; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen graduated from the Municipal Clerks of Illinois Institute in 2011 and earned certification as a municipal clerk at the state and international levels; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen was appointed executive administrator to the Mayor’s Office and Treasurer of the Village of Schiller Park in 2017; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen has been a commissioner of the Cook County Commission on Women’s Issues since 2008 and is vice president of the River Grove Lions Club; and 

 

WHEREAS, Margie Manchen volunteers for the Special Olympics and the Glass Slipper Project, is an advocate and supporter of WINGS and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and was a court-appointed special advocate in Kane County where she represented abused and neglected children.  

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby congratulate Margie Manchen on her well-deserved McManus Award; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Margie as an expression of our appreciation for her commitment to the Guerin community and beyond.
