RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AUGUST 15TH AS GEORGE “THE MUSIC MAN” DANIELS’ DAY in Cook County, IL.
WHEREAS, George Daniels stands as a Living Legend in music, retail, and community life-beloved by communities, villages, neighborhoods, and networks across the globe for a lifetime of vision, integrity, and steadfast dedication to artists, fans, and independent businesses alike; and
WHEREAS, his steadfast founding of George’s Music Room on December 12, 1969, created a seminal bridge between legendary musicians and diverse audiences on Chicago’s West Side, enriching culture and commerce for generations; and
WHEREAS, his leadership demonstrates that family and loyalty are the wells from which lasting success flows, turning the simple word “family” into a powerful blueprint for community-minded enterprise; and
WHEREAS, his influence reaches beyond commerce into mentorship and advocacy, earning affectionate titles such as “Unk,” “The Music Man,” and “The Messenger,” and inspiring trust across generations-from Chicago to Africa; and
WHEREAS, his dedication to curating authentic music experiences-through retail, media appearances, conferences, and collaborations-has preserved and promoted the artistry of both iconic legends and emerging talents alike; and
Whereas, his philanthropy and civic leadership form the enduring heartbeat of Chicago’s culture, proving that business at its best sustains families, neighborhoods, and futures; and
WHEREAS, the global respect he has earned-from artists like Queen Latifah to Snoop Dogg and peers around the world-reflects the universal impact of his mentorship, integrity, and generosity; and
WHEREAS, his remarkable career path-from janitor and driver at Chess Records to a principal voice in music retail-illustrates the power of perseverance, adaptability, and lifelong learning; and
WHEREAS, his achievements, including National Association of Recording Merchandisers Retailer of the Year, symbolize a standard of excellence and ethical leadership in a changing industry, cementing his contribution in Chicago and American history; and
WHEREAS, the forthcoming documentary project to document and broadcast his influence will educate, inspire, and amplify a legacy that transcends generations of artists and entrepreneurs; and
WHEREAS, this film will cement George Daniels’ name in Chicago and American history, preserving a nuanced understanding of music’s social and economic context; and
WHEREAS, his impact as a “Music Man” is celebrated not only for business success but for shaping spaces where artists feel valued, supported, and empowered to pursue their art fearlessly; and
BE IT RESOLVED, that George Daniels is truly a Living Legend-a force of character and heart whose life-story illuminates the power of family, community, music, and mentorship; whose presence elevates present deeds and ignites the ambitions of future generations; and whose enduring example calls us all to integrity, generosity, and excellence; and
BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED, that Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, 5th District Commissioner Dr. Kisha E. McCaskill, and the Cook County Board declare and decree August 15th as George “The Music Man” Daniels Day in Cook County, Illinois, to honor his lasting contributions to music, culture, and community.
