PROPOSED RESOLUTION
WILLIAM H. LOGAN JR., IN MEMORIAM
WHEREAS, William H. "Bill" Logan was a longtime Evanston resident and active community member; and
WHEREAS, he dedicated decades to public and community service within Evanston; and
WHEREAS, William Logan held many firsts in Evanston including the First Black Home Room President, the First Black Football Captain, and the First Black Senior Class Vice President; and
WHEREAS, William Logan joined the Evanston Police Department in 1957 and served for 30 years; and
WHEREAS, he served as a bodyguard for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. during Dr. King's visit to Evanston; and
WHEREAS, he served and moved up through various positions and ranks at the Evanston Police Department, including the first Black Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police; and
WHEREAS, during his time at the Evanston Police Department, he implemented policies and practices to move the department toward community policing; and
WHEREAS, when he retired from the Evanston Police Department, he took a role as Director of Safety and Security at Evanston Township High School (ETHS); and
WHEREAS, during his time at ETHS, he brought a new level of professionalism to the Security Department and fostered respectful relationships with the students, instead of approaching them in a punitive manner; and
WHEREAS, he implemented crossing guards and CPR training for staff; and
WHEREAS, William Logan was a Co-founding member of the Chessmen Club of The North Shore, Evanston's oldest Black men's community organization; and
WHEREAS, William Logan was Co-founder of FAAM (Fellowship of African-American Men), a middle- school-focused basketball and cheerleading nonprofit; and
WHEREAS, preceding William in death was his wife, Marcia "Sissy" Logan. William is survived by his sons William "Billy" H. Logan III., Cheryl Lynn Logan-Bottoms (James) and Gilo Kwesi Cornell Gary Logan (Miah). Grandchildren: Ulaiassi Kwabena Logan, Olu Sekou Logan, ...
