Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING JASON ALTMANN AS THE FIRST DEAF PERSON TO BROADCAST THE STANLEY CUP FINALS IN SIGN LANGUAGE WHEAREAS, Jason Altmann, a third-generation deaf person from Schaumburg, IL, made history on June 10, 2024, in the National Hockey League (NHL) by being the first deaf person to broadcast the event in sign language; and WHEAREAS, Altmann served as the legislative chair for the Illinois Association of the Deaf from 2015-2019; and WHAREAS, in 2017, during his time as the legislative chair, the Illinois Association of the Deaf won the Michael K. Berger Presidental Award for volunteer contributions and social justice advocacy; and WHAREAS, it is important to note the heightened difficulty for deaf broadcasters as they interpret the feed given that they must simultaneously watch their interpreters who receive the video feed from the NHL production crew, watch their television monitors, follow the game itself, and make sure they're addressing the proper camera; ...

PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

RECOGNIZING JASON ALTMANN AS THE FIRST DEAF PERSON TO BROADCAST THE STANLEY CUP FINALS IN SIGN LANGUAGE 

 

WHEAREAS, Jason Altmann, a third-generation deaf person from Schaumburg, IL, made history on June 10, 2024, in the National Hockey League (NHL) by being the first deaf person to broadcast the event in sign language; and

 

WHEAREAS, Altmann served as the legislative chair for the Illinois Association of the Deaf from 2015-2019; and

 

WHAREAS, in 2017, during his time as the legislative chair, the Illinois Association of the Deaf won the Michael K. Berger Presidental Award for volunteer contributions and social justice advocacy; and

 

WHAREAS, it is important to note the heightened difficulty for deaf broadcasters as they interpret the feed given that they must simultaneously watch their interpreters who receive the video feed from the NHL production crew, watch their television monitors, follow the game itself, and make sure they’re addressing the proper camera; and

 

WHAREAS, Altmann’s goal is to maintain the American Sign Language, and to continue to showcase the talents of deaf people and their ability to do any job;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners does herby offer its congratulations to Jason Altmnan on being the first deaf person to broadcast The Stanley Cup Finals in sign language; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon official proceedings of this Honorable body, and its suitable copies be tendered to Jason Altmann as he continues making history.
