Summary: The Circuit Court of Cook County will receive state grant funding from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, Adult Redeploy Illinois Program to enhance felony Mental Health Courts (MHC) operating across the jurisdiction. All seven MHC are post-adjudicatory programs that divert high risk and high needs individuals from commitment to IDOC to community-based supervision that employs an evidence-based PSC model that combines intensive judicial supervision, individualized case planning with enhanced engagement with MH services, and support in the community to help improve psychiatric symptoms and reduce subsequent arrests. The goal of MHC is to reduce criminal activity, improve behavioral health and promote public safety by addressing the disproportionate involvement and specialized needs of people with an serious mental illness in the criminal justice system by facilitating early identification and prompt referral and placement with medical, psychiatric and substance use disorder treatment.
