PROPOSED RESOLUTION
CELEBRATING THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA)
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guarantees equal access and opportunities for individuals with disabilities in employment, public accommodations, transportation, telecommunications, and state and local government services; and
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law on July 26, 1990, when President George H.W. Bush signed it; and
WHEREAS, it marked a significant legislative milestone designed to prevent discrimination against people with disabilities.
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) was signed into law in 2008 and became effective on January 1, 2009.
WHEREAS, the ADAAA made many significant changes to the definition of "disability." The changes in the definition of disability in the ADAAA apply to all titles of the ADA.
WHEREAS, the changes included Title I (employment practices of private employers with 15 or more employees, state and local governments, employment agencies, labor unions, agents of the employer, and joint management-labor committees); Title II (programs and activities of state and local governments); and
WHEREAS, the ADA confirms the country's dedication to providing individuals with disabilities the same rights and opportunities as others, advocating for inclusion, independence, and equal access; and
WHEREAS, approximately 27% of U.S. adults-more than 61 million people-have a disability, which is about 1 in 4 individuals.
WHEREAS, older adults (over 65) experience higher rates, with nearly 40% having a disability. Additionally, low-income communities and people of color are more affected due to limited access to healthcare and early intervention.
WHEREAS, July is celebrated as ADA Anniversary Month, a period to recognize the progress achieved, acknowledge ongoing efforts toward complete equity and inclusion, and honor the contributions of individuals with ...
