PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE LIFE OF MALCOLM WOO
WHEREAS, Malcolm Woo joined the Chicago police force in 1969, becoming one of the department's first Chinese American officers; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm retired from the Chicago Police Department in 1998, celebrating a remarkable and groundbreaking career as the first Chinese American Chicago police officer to retire with a full career after nearly 30 years of service; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm was born in Chicago on December 07, 1944, to Raymond and Anita Woo and grew up in Chicago's Chinatown; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm began his service as a beat cop and later took up undercover assignments; and
WHEREAS, Woo's career spanned various roles, including a decade on Mayor Richard M. Daley's security detail; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm was a founding member of the Asian American Law Enforcement Association (AALEA), promoting diversity and inclusion in law enforcement. Malcolm made it his mission to help others have successful careers in the field; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm was deeply connected to the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, serving on the board from the early days of the museum, and contributing significantly to the preservation and celebration of Chinese American culture. In 2012, Malcolm received the Appreciation Award that recognized his unselfish gift of time and energy as "keeper of the building" and untiring commitment as a member on the board; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm cherished his family. Malcolm married his loving wife Christine (Tina) on July 20th, 1974. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this summer; and
WHEREAS, outside of his accomplishments in law enforcement, Malcolm had a passion for family, especially for his grandchildren. Additionally, he loved music, napping, cars, and spending time in Las Vegas; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm Brian Woo passed away at 79 on July 8th, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Malcolm is preceded in death by his father and mother, Raymond and Anita. He is survived by hi...
