PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE ILLINOIS COMMISSION ON DIVERSITY AND HUMAN RELATIONS
WHEREAS, the Illinois Commission on Diversity and Human Relations (ICDHR) has an active Board of Directors consisting of members from the business, education and community sectors; and
WHEREAS, since its formation in 1965, the commission has been the voice of diversity and inclusiveness; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the ICDHR is to create and execute successful human relations building models across race, gender and culture; and
WHEREAS, ICDHR’s founder, the Reverend Clyde H. Brooks, who worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was moved to help fulfill the dream of Dr. King by creating structures to address Dr. King’s ideals of justice, equality and unity; and
WHEREAS, with the support of Motorola Solutions and other companies, the ICDHR created the Youth and Law Project designed to help young minority males to better interact with law enforcement on the streets, reducing injury, death and turmoil; and
WHEREAS, for 50 consecutive years since Dr. King’s passing, the ICDHR has sponsored the annual remembrance of Dr. King, both in the suburbs and the city of Chicago. Thousands of people have participated and thousands of dollars have been raised to fund scholarships, education programs and employment opportunities; and
WHEREAS, currently, ICDHR’s Black and White Divide initiative brings community leaders and residents together in an open conversation about persistent racism in our society; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, honor the Illinois Commission on Diversity and Human Relations and praise its essential contribution to the health and viability of Cook County.end
