PROPOSED RESOLUTION
ACKNOWLEDGING WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
WHEREAS, Down syndrome is a genetic and physical disorder caused by an extra 21st chromosome in the human body, and;
WHEREAS, Down syndrome is the most frequently occurring chromosomal condition, and;
WHEREAS, there is an estimated six million people with Down syndrome worldwide and more than 200,000 in the United States, and;
WHEREAS, in the United States, Down syndrome is prevalent in one (1) in every 700 live births, and;
WHEREAS, World Down Syndrome Day is March 21st every year. The 21st day of the 3rd month represents the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome, and;
WHEREAS, World Down Syndrome Day has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012, and;
WHEREAS, the goal is to bring awareness and support for those with Down syndrome, and;
WHEREAS, the theme for World Down Syndrome Day is “Improve Our Support Systems,” and;
WHEREAS, in accordance with the theme, all levels of government are called to offer support and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to offer support to their families and caregivers, and;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, does hereby acknowledge March 21st as World Down Syndrome Day and the theme of support and inclusion, and;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this Resolution be archived as a token of the esteem held by the President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners and the Cook County Board of Commissioners and be deferred to the Health and Hospitals Committee for further discussion and a public hearing.
