PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF AUGUST AS NATIONAL WELLNESS MONTH
WHEREAS, August is National Wellness Month, a time to focus on all aspects of wellbeing: physical, mental, emotional, and social; and
WHEREAS, the month focuses on self-care, stress management, and healthy routines; and
WHEREAS, it is to raise awareness on the importance of self-care and encourage healthy habits into daily lives; and
WHEREAS, according to YouGov, about 32% of US adults engage in self-care daily and around 43% weekly; and
WHEREAS, since the pandemic, the wellness economy has grown at a rapid pace due to the rise in the realization of need; and
WHEREAS, the wellness industry's global market has reached $6.3 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $9 billion by 2028; and
WHEREAS, the four pillars of wellness are nutrition, exercise, relaxation, and sleep; and
WHEREAS, regular exercise and proper nutrition can help prevent cardiovascular disease, obesity, and fall risk behaviors; and
WHEREAS, Gen Z and millennials are increasingly prioritizing wellness, with 30% of Gen Z and millennials reporting they prioritize wellness a lot more than last year; and
WHEREAS, employees surveyed in the US reported that their work contributed to the decline of their physical health; and
WHEREAS, in 2024, only about 24% of workers in the US felt their organization cared about their well-being; and
WHEREAS, due to the decline of wellness in employees in the US, many have come to prioritize remote jobs; and
WHEREAS, this month is a time to reflect on our routines, make positive changes, and prioritize our health and well-being.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners recognizes August as National Wellness Month.
