PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION HONORING THE RETIREMENT OF STATE SENATOR JAMES MEEKS AS SENIOR PASTOR OF SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH
WHEREAS, James Meeks founded Salem Baptist Church in 1985, and under his leadership, the church has been instrumental in improving the lives of Black Chicagoans for nearly four decades;
WHEREAS, State Senator James Meeks was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 2002 and served until 2013, and during his tenure, he also chaired the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus;
WHEREAS, in 2017, State Senator James Meeks was appointed the Chair of the Illinois State Board of Education, further demonstrating his dedication to public service and education;
WHEREAS, State Senator James Meeks will be greatly missed by his congregation of over 10,000 weekly congregants as well as his many colleagues in Illinois government;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Cook County Board of Commissioners honors the retirement of State Senator James Meeks as Senior Pastor of Salem Baptist Church and expresses its appreciation for his leadership and service to the community.
