PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF UNITED NATIONS WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST RACISM IN DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA
WHEREAS, this year marks the 25th Anniversary of The United Nations held the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance (WCAR) in Durban, South Africa, and
WHEREAS, over 16,000 people from across the globe attended the WCAR including 2,500 delegates from 170 countries, 4,000 civil society and non-governmental organization members, and 1,300 journalists and media staff; and
WHEREAS, one of the outcomes of the WCAR was The Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA) which established a landmark international consensus framework to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance; and
WHEREAS, the work from the WCAR continues to live in communities across Cook County including the first municipal reparations program in the country passed in Evanston, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, the 25th Anniversary of the WCAR serves as an international day of remembrance, reflection, and mobilization that has been celebrated in Cook County, and around the world; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County hereby commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the World Conference Against Racism; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be provided to Cook County leaders who attended the WCAR as an honorable expression of appreciation for their work.
