PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

RECOGNIZING PARKS AND RECREATION MONTH

 

WHEREAS, since 1985, July has been celebrated as Park and Recreation Month to promote building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation; and 

 

WHEREAS, through efforts by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the U.S. House of Representatives passed an official resolution for Parks and Recreation Month in 2009; and 

 

WHEREAS, the month serves as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the hundreds of thousands of parks and recreation professionals who maintain our country’s local, state, and community parks year-round; and    

 

WHEREAS, 2024’s theme is “Where You Belong” and celebrates the many ways that parks and recreation professionals across the country foster a sense of belonging in their community as they work to provide welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connections; and 

 

WHEREAS, as of 2018, the Illinois Comptroller’s Office reported that 88 of the State’s Park Districts reside within Cook County, making up 25.3% of all park districts in Illinois; and 

 

WHEREAS, parks remain a cornerstone of nearly every community, serving millions of people as the places anyone can go to be active, live healthier, connect with nature, and gather together;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Board of Commissioners does hereby proclaim July as Parks and Recreation Month in recognition of the importance of those who maintain our local, state, and community parks.
