PROPOSED RESOLUTION
SUPPORTING THE ELMWOOD PARK PEACE OFFICERS’ MEMORIAL
AND THE ELMWOOD PARK POLICE OFFICERS KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
WHEREAS, the Elmwood Park Police Department was organized in 1914, the year of the village’s incorporation; and
WHEREAS, the department was initiated to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution” and to secure public safety in the Village of Elmwood Park; and
WHEREAS, the Elmwood Park Peace Officers’ Memorial is proposed to be constructed at the site of the Elmwood Park Police Station and will be funded entirely by private donations; and
WHEREAS, the Elmwood Park community and others will remember the fallen officers at an Elmwood Park Peace Officers’ Memorial benefit on March 12, 2016; and
WHEREAS, the proceeds in excess of the construction cost of the memorial will be donated to the One Hundred Club of Chicago, a civilian organization that provides for families of first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, May 15, 2016, is the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day throughout the nation and specifically designated so in Cook County by the Board of Commissioners; and
WHEREAS, this memorial will specifically pay tribute to two officers of the Elmwood Park Police Department who died in the line of duty: Chief Emil Johnson on October 5, 1924, and Patrolman Nels M. Christy on July 2, 1930.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize the efforts all who have worked to make the Elmwood Park Peace Officers’ Memorial a reality and honor Chief Johnson and Patrolman Christy.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a commemorative copy of this resolution be sent to the Elmwood Park Police Department in honor of the fallen officers.
