PROPOSED RESOLUTION
PROCLAIMING PRIDE MONTH IN COOK COUNTY
WHEREAS, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month is celebrated each year in the month of June; and
WHEREAS, Pride Month commemorates the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that occurred in the Manhattan borough of New York City in June 1969; and
WHEREAS, the Stonewall Riots where a series of demonstrations in which members of the LGBT community protested police raids and harassment; and
WHEREAS, the Stonewall Riots marked the beginning of the modern LGBT rights movement; and
WHEREAS, a year after the Stonewall Riots, Chicago held its first Pride Parade on June 27, 1970, with approximately 200 people in attendance; and
WHEREAS, the annual Chicago Pride Parade is now iconic and one of the largest Pride events in the country in which residents throughout Cook County and the nation have the opportunity to celebrate and stand as one with the LGBT community, their families and friends; and
WHEREAS, on June 26, 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States ruled all fifty states perform and recognize the marriages of same-sex couples, a historic point for equality in the LGBT community; and
WHEREAS, the LGBT community is an important contributor to the diverse and vibrant communities across Cook County; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, hereby proclaim the month of June 2018 to be PRIDE MONTH IN COOK COUNTY; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners hereby recommit to strengthening the advancement of equality for the LGBT community of Cook County.end
