PROPOSED RESOLUTION
RECOGNIZING MAY AS NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS MONTH
WHEREAS, May is recognized as National Small Business Month in the United States; and
WHEREAS, this time is an opportunity to honor and acknowledge the impact of small businesses and entrepreneurs on the economy; and
WHEREAS, in 1963, President John F. Kennedy declared the inaugural National Small Business Week to acknowledge the vital contribution of small businesses to the American economy; and
WHEREAS, in 1983, the celebration was extended from a week to an entire month, enabling greater recognition and support for small businesses; and
WHEREAS, the U.S Small Business Administration (S.B.A.) helps organize this celebration every year; and
WHEREAS, the S.B.A. aids small business owners and entrepreneurs realize the American dream. This federal agency, dedicated to the support of small enterprises, provides counseling, funding, and contracting guidance to them; and
WHEREAS, supporting local shopping and sharing success stories encourages small businesses while showcasing their accomplishments and ensuring growth for others; and
WHEREAS, according to a 2020 study by the U.S. S.B.A., there are 31.7 million small businesses in the United States; and
WHEREAS, in 2021, small businesses accounted for 99.7% of all business establishments in Cook County; and
WHEREAS, Cook County has introduced various initiatives to assist small businesses, including establishing a working group, the Source Grow Grant Program initiated in 2022, and the Small Business Source Platform; and
WHEREAS, small businesses are crucial for innovation, job creation, and community development.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners recognizes May as National Small Business Month and commends all small businesses for their dedication and contributions.
