Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF AGNES ELIZABETH 'BETTY' [SCHEVERS] HAMER WHEREAS, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, has taken from our midst Agnes Elizabeth 'Betty' [Schevers] Hamer, born into life on September 16, 1916 and born into eternal life on June 21, 2014, aged 97 years and nine months; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was born at Chicago's Mercy Hospital in 1916 and lived in the Chicago area for seventy years, residing in St. Martin, St. Dorothy, St. Kilian, Christ the King and St. Germaine parishes; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was the oldest of four children of James and Agnes Schevers; her father was Past Grand Knight of the Englewood Council of the Knights of Columbus [1923-1924]; Mrs. Hamer was predeceased by her brothers "Bud" [Father Joel Schevers, O.Carm], Richard "Bus" Schevers and her sister Dorothy Cooper; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer graduated from St. Kilian Grammar School [1930] and 'Longwood' Academy of Our Lady [1934] and worked at Commonwealth Edison [1934-1...

IN MEMORY OF AGNES ELIZABETH 'BETTY' [SCHEVERS] HAMER
 
WHEREAS, Almighty God, in His infinite wisdom, has taken from our midst Agnes Elizabeth 'Betty' [Schevers] Hamer, born into life on September 16, 1916 and born into eternal life on June 21, 2014, aged 97 years and nine months; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was born at Chicago's Mercy Hospital in 1916 and lived in the Chicago area for seventy years, residing in St. Martin, St. Dorothy, St. Kilian, Christ the King and St. Germaine parishes; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer married Arthur J. Hamer, a Certified Public Accountant, on her 23rd birthday [September 16, 1939], and Arthur predeceased her in 1973; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer raised six children, Barbara Pinn (Frank), Arthur "Artie" Hamer, Carolyn Doody (Lawrence), Donald Hamer (Geri), Elizabeth O'Connor (John) and Frank Hamer in St. Kilian [Gresham/Brainerd area] and Christ the King [Beverly area] parishes; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was the grandmother of Larry Doody (Connie), Elizabeth "Liz" Doody Gorman (Gerry), Danny Doody, Debbie Furlong (Dennis), Frank Pinn (Liz), Kevin O'Connor (Dawn), Sean O'Connor (Alison); and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was the proud great grandmother of sixteen: Conor, Liam and Shane Gorman; Riley Doody; Brendan, Matthew and Dennis Furlong; Mary, Frank and John Pinn; and Lilian, Gavin Arthur, Nicholas, Daniel, Cara Elizabeth and Declan O'Connor; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was also the cherished sister-in-law of Bernice Mulcahy and much loved aunt ["Saint Betty"] to many nieces and nephews from the Cooper, Donaghue, Marshall, Mulcahy and Schevers families; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was active in her community serving as the President of the Theta Rho Sigma sorority for three terms, President of the Christ the King Women's Altar Guild for two years, Treasurer, Financial Secretary and later President of the Mt. Carmel Mother's Club, Board Member of the 'Longwood' Academy of Our Lady Mother's Club for six years and served for twenty-one years as the secretary for the Christ the King Parish; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer led a life full of joy and contentment and served her community in the Chicagoland area in innumerable ways, Mrs. Hamer retired to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1986; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer continued to thrive and stay active serving on the Steering Committee and being an active Social Committee member at Point Brittany participating in water aerobics and attending luncheons with her numerous friends and organizations, while still managing to open her home and cook for all her family and friends that often visited this exceptional and much admired and loved woman; and
 
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hamer was a cherished friend to many from Christ the King and her sorority sisters and at Point Brittany where she resided since her retirement and became an active member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in St. Petersburg.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, do hereby express our deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the family as well as to the many friends and loved ones of Agnes Elizabeth 'Betty' [Schevers] Hamer, and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the text of this resolution be spread across the Journal of these Proceedings and that a suitable copy of this Resolution be tendered to the family of Agnes Elizabeth 'Betty' [Schevers] Hamer so that her rich legacy may be so honored and ever cherished.
