HONORING DOROTHY GATERS MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL COACH ON HER 1,000TH CAREER VICTORY

WHEREAS for the past four decades Dorothy Gaters, a graduate of Marshall High School, has been the first and only coach of the Marshall High School girls' basketball team, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters has led the Marshall High School girls' basketball team to eight state championships and multiple city championships, elite eight state tournament appearances, Public League Championship game appearances and has had several of her teams inducted into the state basketball Hall of Fame, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters has herself been inducted into the National Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee, class of 2000, and,

WHEREAS on November 18, 2014 Coach Gaters achieved a historic milestone by winning her 1,000th victory as head coach of the Marshall High School Commandos, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters has excelled in her career not only as a high school basketball coach but as a Physical Education Teacher, Department Chairperson, Athletic Director and Public League Basketball Coaches Association President, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters ranks eighth nationally all-time in wins as a girls' basketball coach, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters and her basketball program has had a 100 per cent graduation rate, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters has helped to develop some of the top student athletes in the country including Cappie Pondexter, Janet Harris, and Toni Foster, and,

WHEREAS Coach Gaters in 2001 started the MLK Dream Classic, which brings together more than 40 girls' and boys' basketball teams from across the country to honor the dream and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a basketball shootout, and,
