PROPOSED RESOLUTION
PRIDE MONTH
WHEREAS, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June, and
WHEREAS, Pride Month is meant to commemorate the anniversary of the June 1969 "Stonewall Riots" that occurred in the Manhattan borough of New York City. This event is widely considered to be the most important event in the modern LGBT rights movement; and
WHEREAS, after the Stonewall Riots, in the 1970's and 1980's Pride events were concentrated to one "Pride Week" in June. However, due to the growth of the movement, the week has expanded to a "Pride Month" to accommodate the abundance of activities; and
WHEREAS, the Chicago Pride Parade was first held on June 27, 1970, with approximately 200 people in attendance. It is now one of the largest Pride festivals in the country with thousands of people who attend annually. The 2015 parade is scheduled for Sunday, June 28; and
WHEREAS, Pride Month provides us all with the annual opportunity to celebrate, strengthen, empower, and unify with the LGBT community, their families, and allies throughout Cook County; and
WHEREAS, as a society we have worked to promote the belief that sexual orientation and gender identity are a part of human diversity is something that the LGBT community can take immense pride; and
WHEREAS, LGBT men and women, through their academic, artistic, and economic contributions, play and integral part in creating the diverse and vibrant community and culture that is the hallmark of life in Cook County, the State of Illinois, and the United States of America.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the President and The Cook County Board of Commissioners, proclaim the month of JUNE 2015 to be PRIDE MONTH IN COOK COUNTY and a call to action to end prejudice and discrimination in all of its forms.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this resolution be presented the leaders of the LGBT community of Cook County.end
