PROPOSED RESOLUTION
MARIO SILVESTRI, IN MEMORIAM
WHEREAS, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called Mario Silvestri, the dear father of our friend Commissioner Peter Silvestri, from our midst; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was the beloved husband of the late Clara (nee Frabotta); and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was the loving father of Commissioner Peter Silvestri; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was the loving grandfather of Christian Peter Silvestri; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was the dear brother of Peter (Elena) Silvestri; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was the loving son of the late Pietro and Maria (Fiore) Silvestri; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was the fond brother of Peter Silvestri; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was born on August 14, 1921 on a farm on the outskirts of Pofi, Frosinone in the Kingdom of Italy, and when he was six Mario’s father Peter immigrated to Endicott, New York and then later to Chicago, Illinois, while Maria and her sons remained in Italy and lived with Peter’s parents on the family farm; and
WHEREAS, Mario realized that the agricultural life was not his calling, and in 1940 joined the carabanieri, the Italian national police force, and then in 1943 Mario relocated to Wyoming and later New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, after sixteen years apart Mario reunited with his father Peter and the Silvestris who were living in Chicago, and in 1945 he returned to Pofi and met Clara who was living on the Silvestri farm due to the war bombardment of the area towns and villages; and
WHEREAS, in 1950 he married Clara, the love of his life, and immigrated to Brantford, Ontario, Canada and on January 12, 1957 their only son, Peter, was born; and
WHEREAS, in 1962 the family relocated to Superior Street in Chicago in a two flat owned by Mario’s Uncle Sam and occupied by Mario’s parents; and
WHEREAS, in November 1971 the family moved to Elmwood Park where Mario and Clara became the owner of a three flat building; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri enjoyed playing with his grandson, attending his son’s political events, tending to his garden, traveling, engaging in political commentary, welding, reading, and watching history programs and western movies; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri was a devout Roman Catholic, dedicated husband, supportive father, and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri celebrated his 94th birthday on August 14, 2015 and joined his wife Clara on their 65th wedding anniversary, August 19, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Mario Silvestri touched the lives of many and will be remembered by all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, all who knew him will attest that Mario Silvestri was a kind and compassionate man, virtuous of character and gentle in spirit, admired and respected by his many friends and neighbors, and dearly loved by his family; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County that the Board does hereby offer its deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to our dear friend Commissioner Peter Silvestri, and joins him and the many friends and family of Mario Silvestri in sorrow at this time of loss; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of the same be tendered to Commissioner Peter Silvestri so that Mario’s memory may be so honored and ever cherished.
