A RESOLUTION OF THE COOK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS CONGRATULATING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY CHARITABLE ASSOCIATION ON 125 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

WHEREAS, The Nineteenth Century Club was established in 1891 by a group of visionary women who believed that education, charitable activities, and civic involvement were vital elements in a thriving community; and,

WHEREAS, the organization has spent the last 125 years focused on strengthening the community through learning, funding over 1,020 four-year college scholarships to local students and offering over 6,700 enriching and educational programs; and,

WHEREAS, the organization has supported thousands of donations to community organizations and not-for-profits through direct community outreach, grant funding and the reduced or free use of their landmark building; and,

WHEREAS, the organization has dedicated countless hours to sewing and knitting more than 56,000 garments for infants, children, soldiers, and those in need from natural disasters; and,

WHEREAS, the organization has grown in the last 125 years to become a trusted community anchor that has touched innumerable lives; and,

WHEREAS, the building owned by the organization, located at 178 Forest Avenue in Oak Park, finds its purpose in supporting and enabling their charitable, cultural, and educational endeavors, which are carried out by many volunteers, donors, and over 200 members; and,

WHEREAS, the spirit of the founders continues through these many acts of benevolence; and,

WHEREAS, their diverse membership continues to build mutually beneficial partnerships, practice and promote charitable giving, and advance intellectual stimulation, learning, volunteerism, and fellowship.
