RECOGNIZING IRENE L?PEZ FOR HER CONTINUED DEDICATION TO THE COMMUNITIES OF COOK COUNTY IN HONOR OF WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

WHEREAS, March is Women's History Month in which we not only highlight the contributions of women in history but also in contemporary society; and

WHEREAS, Irene L?pez was born in Zitacuaro Michoacan on December 11, 1985 to David Lopez and Carolina Lopez; and

WHEREAS, Irene L?pez immigrated to the United States with her family at the age of 4 years old and was raised in the Back of the Yards neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, at a very young age, Irene L?pez began to get involved in extracurricular activities such as the children's choirs at Holy Cross Parish, the Mexican Ballet Folklorico at the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council and the Holy Cross Marimba Ensemble; and

WHEREAS, at the age of 14 years old, Irene L?pez dedicated her life to working with youth through Mayor Daley's YouthNet Program; and

WHEREAS, Irene L?pez later became the after-school program Director at Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council working with the Department of Family and Support Services as Region 4 Coordinator; and

WHEREAS, Irene L?pez has had responsibilities ranging from annually planning and developing community events such as back to school events with up to 800 participants, Hoops in the Hood, and leading the Quality of Life Plan through the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC); and

WHEREAS, Irene L?pez was one of the initial members that began the community newspaper The Gate which serves the Back of the Yards community and the surrounding neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, Irene L?pez is on the board of the Union Impact Center that brings tools necessary for developing physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual growth to youth in various communities; and
