PROPOSED RESOLUTION
COMMEMMORATING THE 100-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE VILLAGE OF MOUNT PROSPECT
WHEREAS, the Village of Mount Prospect will be turning 100 on February 3, 2017; and
WHEREAS, upon its incorporation in 1917, Mount Prospect had a population of 300 and elected its first mayor, William Busse; and
WHEREAS, in 1919, construction of the vital transportation artery Northwest Highway began, thanks to Cook County Commissioner William Busse; and
WHEREAS, in 1930, Mount Prospect was the only city or village in Cook County that was not out of money during the Great Depression; and
WHEREAS, the largest population growth of Mount Prospect occurred during the land speculation of the 1920s and then during the suburban movements that followed World War II; and
WHEREAS, from 1953-1963, Mount Prospect's School District 57 constructed six schools to accommodate the population boom; and
WHEREAS, in 1962, Randhurst Mall opened and was the largest mall in the Chicago area and the first indoor, air-conditioned mall in the Midwest. It is now known as Randhurst Village-an open-air, mixed-use center that includes retail, hotel, entertainment, office, dining, and other uses; and
WHEREAS, during the 1990s and 2000s, the Village of Mount Prospect focused on downtown redevelopment, taking advantage of the village's great housing stock, high-performing schools, and convenient location to downtown Chicago, O'Hare, interstate highways, and commuter rail lines; and
WHEREAS, Mount Prospect received national recognition when Business Week Magazine announced in 2008 that Mount Prospect was the number one place to raise kids, followed in 2010 by Money Magazine's claim that the village was one of the "Top 50 Places to Live" in the U.S; and
WHEREAS, in 2013, Movoto Real Estate, which ranks cities and towns across America, named Mount Prospect one of the "Top 10 Best Cities in Illinois;" and
