Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NILES SHERMAN WHEREAS, the members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners are honored to recognize the life and accomplishments of Niles Sherman; and WHEREAS, On Monday, February 6, 2017, God in His infinite wisdom called to his eternal reward Niles Sherman; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sherman, the oldest of ten children was born on February 8, 1929 to Robert and Amanda Sherman; and WHEREAS, Mr. Sherman was a proud and dedicated career officer for the Chicago Police Department and President of the Brainard Community Action Coalition; and WHEREAS, Niles Sherman was elected into office as the alderman of the 21st ward in 1979 and the ward committeeman the following year; and WHEREAS, He served as alderman of the 21st ward until 1987; and WHEREAS, Alderman Sherman was a fearless activist on behalf of his constituents. HONORING THE LIFE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NILES SHERMAN

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners are honored to recognize the life and accomplishments of Niles Sherman; and

 

WHEREAS, On Monday, February 6, 2017, God in His infinite wisdom called to his eternal reward Niles Sherman; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sherman, the oldest of ten children was born on February 8, 1929 to Robert and Amanda Sherman; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Sherman was a proud and dedicated career officer for the Chicago Police Department and President of the Brainard Community Action Coalition; and

 

WHEREAS, Niles Sherman was elected into office as the alderman of the 21st ward in 1979 and the ward committeeman the following year; and

 

WHEREAS, He served as alderman of the 21st ward until 1987; and

 

WHEREAS, Alderman Sherman was a fearless activist on behalf of his constituents.  He demanded that Chicago government either “Cut us in or cut it out”; and

 

WHEREAS, his steadfast dedication to serving others is depicted in the career positions that he held along with the numerous awards and commendations that he received. He served as the Democratic State Central Committeeman of the 2nd Congressional District, Assistant Commissioner for the Chicago Department of Water, and Director of the City of Chicago Youth and Correctional services; and

 

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board President and the members of the Board of Commissioners would like to extend their deepest condolences and heartfelt sorrow at the passing of Mr. Niles Sherman; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, by the Cook County Board President and the Board of Commissioners shall recognize and honor Mr. Niles Sherman in celebration of his life, accomplishments, and commitment to the citizens of Chicago;  and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Cook County Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the family of Mr. Niles Sherman.
