PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING CHI HACK NIGHT ON ITS FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AND 250th EVENT

 

WHEREAS, Cook County is home to one of America’s first and largest civic technology communities; and

 

WHEREAS, Chi Hack Night was founded five years ago as a free, weekly event in Chicago to build, share and learn about tools to create, support, and serve the public good; and

 

WHEREAS, Chi Hack Night is a group consisting of thousands of designers, academic researchers, data journalists, activists, policy wonks, web developers and curious citizens who want to make their city more just, equitable, transparent and delightful to live in through data, design and technology as well as by increasing connectivity and interactivity between the City, Cook County and the residents and businesses who call it home; and

 

WHEREAS, Chi Hack Night attendees have produced over 100 applications to serve the residents of Chicago and Cook County; and

 

WHEREAS, Chi Hack Night has hosted over 180 civic technology presentations from government representatives, nonprofits, academic institutions, journalists, activists, technologists and groups devoted to improving transparency, accountability, efficiency and justice throughout Cook County; and

 

WHEREAS, Chi Hack Night has served as an onramp for Cook County residents to participate in civic life through data and technology; and

 

WHEREAS, one of the main organizers and leadership council member of Chi Hack Night Derek Eder, who along with Nick Rougeux created “Look at Cook,com”, one of the most comprehensive websites providing detailed information to visitors on virtually every aspect of the Cook County budget since 1993; and

 

WHEREAS, the Chi Hack Night model served as an inspiration for Code for America’s national Brigade system; and

 

WHEREAS, April 18, 2017 will mark the 250th episode and 5-year anniversary of Chi Hack Night;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Cook County Board President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners do hereby congratulate the organizers, members and supporters of Chi Hack Night on their fifth anniversary and 250th event; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT, this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that a suitable copy of this Resolution be presented to Chi Hack Night in honor of its outstanding achievements.
