PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE TOWN OF MOŃKI, POLAND - STREET RENAMING
WHEREAS, Immigration is something that has accompanied the Polish nation for centuries. You may say that Polish immigrants are citizens of the world, present among different types of countries and cultures, with one of the largest Polish populations right here in Chicago of Cook County; and
WHEREAS, for decades, residents of Mońki, Poland migrated to the United States. American Polonia continue to forge their paths in various professions and trades while holding fast to their origins but have become an integral part in American society in seeking to demonstrate their patriotism, cultivate their traditions and raise their family pursuing the American Dream; and
WHEREAS, the city of Mońki maintains a close relationship with the City of Chicago and Cook County. In 2005, with mutual support and commitment from fellow Poles, a 17-foot bronze statue of St. John Paul II, the first Polish Pope, was installed at St. Hyacinth Basilica in the Logan Square-Avondale Neighborhood as a testament to the thriving Polish Community; and
WHEREAS, in many respects, Milwaukee Avenue has been the hub of migrant, Polish Americans for decades. By naming a section of Milwaukee Avenue, from North Central Park to North Ridgeway, Honorary Ziemia Mońiecka, will strengthen the link of those Polish Americans of the City of Chicago and Cook County to their roots; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby express our gratitude for the enrichment the American Polonia bring to our communities and congratulate all members of the Mońki community on the honorary naming of ‘Ziema Mońiecka’ on this seventh day of May 2017 ; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to a representative of the Mońki region.
