PROPOSED RESOLUTION
HONORING THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF HOWARD AREA COMMUNNITY CENTER
WHEREAS, Howard Area Community Center is a social service agency that provides affordable and free education, employment, and health assistance and programs for the greater Rogers Park area. Their mission is to assist low-income individuals and families in the greater Rogers Park and adjacent communities to stabilize their lives and to develop the social skills necessary to become effective community members. In order to accomplish this mission, the agency's programs provide emergency intervention, family stabilization, and promote developmental growth. Many of their services are life-sustaining; and
WHEREAS, Howard Area Community Center began as a food pantry in 1967 when parishioners from St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church in Rogers Park saw their neighbors living in poverty. They organized to give out food and clothing to lend a helping hand. Since then, the organization has grown exponentially into a major force for good in Cook County. They still feed thousands every year, but now they offer comprehensive resources for the entire family, like adult and early childhood education, youth programs, health and human services, and employment aid to over 8,000 residents annually; and
WHEREAS, on August 25, 2017, the staff, participants, neighbors and donors will all join together to celebrate Howard Area Community Center's fifty years of exceptional service. The organization continues to be an invaluable safety-net for countless people looking to care for themselves and their families and pursue their dreams; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County, on behalf of the 5.2 million residents of Cook County takes great pleasure in honoring and celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Howard Area Community Center and herewith honors the progress and impact they have made in bettering the lives of the citizens of Cook County, Illinois...
