WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was founded in 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and WHERAS, the Sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominantly Black college-educated women; and WHEREAS, the Sorority promotes sisterhood, academic excellence and provides assistance for those in need; and WHEREAS, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., with a membership of more than 700 professional women, provides award-winning public service through the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust which includes Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement (Social Action); and WHEREAS, the theme of the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. is "Service is what we do - Service is who we are!" and it should serve as an exa...

HONORING THE CHICAGO ALUMNAE CHAPTER OF DELTA SIGMA THETA, INC.

 

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was founded in 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and

 

WHERAS, the Sorority is currently a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominantly Black college-educated women; and

 

WHEREAS, the Sorority promotes sisterhood, academic excellence and provides assistance for those in need; and

 

WHEREAS, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., with a membership of more than 700 professional women, provides award-winning public service through the Five-Point Programmatic Thrust which includes Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement (Social Action); and

 

WHEREAS, the theme of the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. is “Service is what we do - Service is who we are!” and it should serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, for nearly 30 years, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., has hosted the Jabberwock event and partnered with D’Estee, Inc., to award hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund the academic dreams of eligible co-eds; and

 

WHEREAS, Jabberwock 2018 - “Keeping the Dream Alive” Awards Gala and Dinner is Sunday, May 20, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place and it will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and

 

WHEREAS, Jabberwock currently provides scholarships and book stipends for more than 30 Chicago Public Schools; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2016, the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., raised $75,000 through the Jabberwock event; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners, on behalf of the residents of Cook County, honors the Chicago Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., for its worthy community outreach programs and events, and praise its essential contribution to the health and viability of Cook County.end
