Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING CHINESE MUTUAL AID ASSOCIATION'S PROGRAMMING EFFORTS, INCLUDING YOUNG WOMEN WARRIORS WHEREAS, Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is a community-based 501(c)3 social services agency that serves low-income immigrants, refugees, people from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, all generations from youth to seniors, and people of all abilities; and, WHEREAS, Community members who had adapted to American life counsel individuals with culture shock, help families find housing, refer job seekers to employment opportunities, and translated information for those who had not yet acquired new language skills; and, WHEREAS, These community-minded individuals joined together to start a social service agency; and, WHEREAS, Since formalizing as a non-profit organization in 2981, CMAA has evolved into a multi-faceted social service agency supported by the state and local government, foundations, corporations, and private individuals; and, WHEREAS, CMAA's "You...

HONORING CHINESE MUTUAL AID ASSOCIATION'S PROGRAMMING EFFORTS, INCLUDING YOUNG WOMEN WARRIORS

WHEREAS, Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is a community-based 501(c)3 social services agency that serves low-income immigrants, refugees, people from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, all generations from youth to seniors, and people of all abilities; and,

WHEREAS, Community members who had adapted to American life counsel individuals with culture shock, help families find housing, refer job seekers to employment opportunities, and translated information for those who had not yet acquired new language skills; and,

WHEREAS, These community-minded individuals joined together to start a social service agency; and,

WHEREAS, Since formalizing as a non-profit organization in 2981, CMAA has evolved into a multi-faceted social service agency supported by the state and local government, foundations, corporations, and private individuals; and,

WHEREAS, CMAA's "Young Women Warriors" is a free, year-round mentorship program that brings young women from 11 to 18 to bond together with older women mentors, introducing these younger women to successful leaders and role models in the community and fostering a strong, lasting support network; and,

WHEREAS, Participants meet twice a month for various informational workshops on issues including applying for college, financial literacy, social services and health as well as team-building activities such as rock-climbing and paintballing; and,

WHEREAS, CMAA also runs a summer school program from late June through August on Mondays through Fridays; and,

WHEREAS, Students take classes in science, math, reading & writing, and arts & crafts to supplement what they have learned in school while also enjoying recreational activities and life skills workshops; and,

WHEREAS, Past activities and workshops have included trips to the Lincoln Park Zoo and workshops on careers and nutrition.
