Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION HONORING THE CALAHAN FOUNDATION WHEREAS, On Saturday, August 25, 2018, The Calahan Foundation celebrated its 4th Annual House 5K Run Walk Ride for Scholarships at Jackson park; and WHEREAS, The Calahan Foundation was birthed by the vision of Edric Calahan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Shirley Calahan of Calahan Funeral Home to create ways of "Giving a Hand Out to Give a Hand up" with a mission to be flexible to meet the deep needs of humanity; and WHEREAS, In 2009, this vision became a reality as the Calahan Foundation became a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. To date, they have provided more than 5000 families living in shelters with warm coats for the winter along with over 10,000 new toys to their children for the holidays; and WHEREAS, The Calahan Foundation currently provides scholarships to 16 college students who have demonstrated excellence in education and a financial need. PROPOSED RESOLUTION

 

HONORING THE CALAHAN FOUNDATION

 

WHEREAS, On Saturday, August 25, 2018, The Calahan Foundation celebrated its 4th Annual House 5K Run Walk Ride for Scholarships at Jackson park; and

 

WHEREAS, The Calahan Foundation was birthed by the vision of Edric Calahan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Shirley Calahan of Calahan Funeral Home to create ways of “Giving a Hand Out to Give a Hand up” with a mission to be flexible to meet the deep needs of humanity; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2009, this vision became a reality as the Calahan Foundation became a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. To date, they have provided more than 5000 families living in shelters with warm coats for the winter along with over 10,000 new toys to their children for the holidays; and

 

WHEREAS, The Calahan Foundation currently provides scholarships to 16 college students who have demonstrated excellence in education and a financial need. Each recipient is awarded a $5000 scholarship over a four year period; and 

 

WHEREAS, In 2015, the Calahan Foundation established a mentor program, which is identified as the “Calahan League of College Scholars “(CLoCS). Each year, four new scholars are

inducted into the “CLoCS” program and is provided with strategies for success to persist to graduation and beyond; and

 

WHEREAS, In 2016, The Calahan Foundation solicited help from all across the City of Chicago after the daughter Valerie Calahan-Taylor heard about the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey supplying over 130,000 pounds of supplies, over 3000 cases of water and monetary donations totaling $10,000; and

WHEREAS, The Calahan Foundation is a true beacon of hope for the Englewood community it has served for over years and believes that while no one person can do everything, each of us can do something.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Board of Commissioners, and on behalf of the 5.2 million residents of Cook County do hereby congratulate The Calahan Foundation for the important and commendable service and leadership it provides to the community.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this resolution be spread upon the official proceeding of this Honorable Body and a ceremonial copy be given to The Calahan Foundation in commemoration of this auspicious occasion.
