Title: PROPOSED RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 75-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOUNT PROSPECT PUBLIC LIBRARY WHEREAS, in 1930 the Mount Prospect Woman's Club established Mount Prospect's first library in a one-room schoolhouse; and WHEREAS, in 1943 a referendum enabling a tax-supported village library was approved, and the Chicago Public Library began a twenty-year relationship of giving the new library start-up assistance; and WHEREAS, in 1944 the library moved to a paint store at 115 S. Main Street; and WHEREAS, in 1950 the first library building was constructed at 14 E. Busse Avenue on land purchased with money donated by organizations and individuals; and WHEREAS, between 1962 and 1965 two additions were made to the building, tripling the floor space; and WHEREAS, a new library opened on the site of the old Central School on December 6, 1976; and WHEREAS, in 1993, as the library celebrated in 50th anniversary, many new services became available to library patrons, including the Readers' Ad...

CELEBRATING THE 75-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOUNT PROSPECT PUBLIC LIBRARY

WHEREAS, in 1930 the Mount Prospect Woman's Club established Mount Prospect's first library in a one-room schoolhouse; and

WHEREAS, in 1943 a referendum enabling a tax-supported village library was approved, and the Chicago Public Library began a twenty-year relationship of giving the new library start-up assistance; and

WHEREAS, in 1944 the library moved to a paint store at 115 S. Main Street; and

WHEREAS, in 1950 the first library building was constructed at 14 E. Busse Avenue on land purchased with money donated by organizations and individuals; and

WHEREAS, between 1962 and 1965 two additions were made to the building, tripling the floor space; and

WHEREAS, a new library opened on the site of the old Central School on December 6, 1976; and

WHEREAS, in 1993, as the library celebrated in 50th anniversary, many new services became available to library patrons, including the Readers' Advisory, a drive-up book drop, and the Internet; and

WHEREAS, a $20.5-million referendum was approved in 2002, and in 2004 construction of the new library building on Emerson Street was completed; and

WHEREAS, annual circulation hit one million for the first time in 2009; and

WHEREAS, in 2013 the library received a 3-star rating from the Library Journal and was selected as one of the Chicago Tribune's Top 100 Workplaces for 2013, an honor it would continue to receive annually; and

WHEREAS, throughout 2018, in honor of its anniversary, the library has offered celebratory programming for all ages and interests.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Mount Prospect Public Library, thanking the institution for being a welcoming, trusted community hub and information source; and
